  1. Welcome to the Concentric Network Internet Access Kit!

  3. Welcome to the Concentric Network, your connection to the "Information Super Highway".
  4. The Internet Access Kit is designed to provide you with all of the
  5. software and service required to access the Internet.
  6.  
  7. The software consists of the popular Netscape World Wide Web browser,
  8. E-mail software, a Usenet news reader, FTP, Telnet, and all of the TCP/IP
  9. modem communication software necessary.  In the single disk version,
  10. the EMail, Newsreader, FTP and Telnet are available via a simple
  11. download/installation procedure once connected to the Concentric network.

  13. The Concentric Internet Access Service is a national network consisting of
  14. over 120 high speed, local access numbers - covering most major
  15. metropolitan areas.  For those outside the local coverage area, for an
  16. additional charge, access to the network is provided via a 1+800
  17. number.  You may sign-up with the Concentric Network electronically
  18. using your modem and a major credit card, or you may contact us by fax or
  19. to obtain your new account.  Once you have obtained your new account,
  20. you have everything you need to begin your exploration of the Internet.  In
  21. order to use the enclosed software, you must be connected to the Internet
  22. using the Concentric Network.

  24. To learn more about the Concentric service, double click on the Netscape icon
  25. within the Concentric Network group to start the registration application.
  26. From within the registration application, you can learn all of the pricing
  27. and service details about the Concentric Internet Service.

  34. ANY OF THE CONCENTRIC INTERNET ACCESS KIT SOFTWARE IN CONJUNCTION WITH ANY
  35. OTHER INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER.

  38. by double clicking on the License icon in the Concentric Network group, or by
  39. viewing the files in netlink\license.txt

  62. If you already have Netscape installed on your system
  63. ---------------------------------------------
  64. If you already have Netscape installed on your system, this kit will
  65. install a new version of Netscape but WILL NOT modify any of your existing
  66. Netscape files.  If you would like to use the new Netscape setup files,
  67. after installation you will need to edit the file c:\windows\win.ini and
  68. change the Netscape entry to point to the new Netscape directory:
  69. c:\cncnet\netscape (your install directory may vary).

  71. During installation, the file c:\cncnet\netscape\initial.htm is created as the
  72. Netscape Home Page.  If you already have Netscape installed, you will need
  73. to open this file manually using Netscape's Open File option.

  75. Using Netscape with another Internet provider
  76. ----------------------------------------------------------
  77. You may use the Netscape browser included within this kit with networks
  78. other than the Concentric Network by following these few steps.

  80. *) Install the Concentric Internet Access Kit using setup.exe
  81.  
  82. *) After installation, use the File Manager (or DOS prompt) and locate the
  83.    directory:  c:\cncnet\netscape (Your install directory may vary)
  84.  
  85. *) Rename the file winsock.dll to winsock.bak
  86.  
  87. *) Make sure that your TCP connectivity software's winsock.dll is located
  88.    in the window's system directory.
  89.  
  90. *) Select the Netscape icon from within the Internet Access Kit group, and
  91.    using the "Properties" menu item within the File menu change the icon to
  92.    point to the file c:\cncnet\netscape\netscape.exe

The following contains important information regarding the use of Concentric's Internet software, including Netscape.  There are configuration instructions and uninstall notations that will be very important if you already have your own Internet Service Provider.  Please read carefully before you proceed.

The software provided by Concentric, including Netscape, is pre-configured to work with their Internet Service.  However, if you would like to use the software with your own Internet Service Provider, you will have to make a few minor adjustments to the configuration.   Follow the steps listed below to make these adjustments.  You may want to print this file for reference while making the changes.  The file is named netbuff.txt.  Open it in NOTEPAD or any other text editor and print the file.

  101. Netscape 1.2n (16 bit version for use with Windows 3.1 or higher)  -  Configuration

  103. 1.  Open File Manager
  104.  
  105. 2.  Highlight the \netscape subdirectory which you will find within the directory that you chose for the Concentric software.  The default directory is c:\cncnet (where c:\ is the letter of the hard drive you selected).

  107. 3.  Highlight the winsock.dll file and choose File, then Rename.  Rename the file to winsock.bak.

  109. 4.  Locate the winsock.dll file used by your Internet Service Provider.  It is usually located in the \windows or \windows\system subdirectory on your hard drive.  If you are unsure where to find your ISP's winsock.dll, you may want to contact your ISP directly.

  111. 5.  Highlight your winsock.dll and COPY to the \netscape subdirectory.

  113. This completes the configuration process.  In order to run Netscape and bypass Concentric's dialer double-click on netscape.exe in the \netscape subdirectory.

  115. **Note:  If you had a prior installation of Netscape, your current settings (bookmark, helper apps, default home page, etc.) will be restored.

  117. iChat - Configuration

  119. 1.  Open File Manager
  120.  
  121. 2.  Highlight the \telnet subdirectory which you will find within the directory that you chose for the Concentric software.  The default directory is c:\cncnet (where c:\ is the letter of the hard drive you selected).

  132. Uninstallation of Concentric's Software
  133.  
  134. **Note:  Concentric provides a uninstall feature which will completely remove its installation.  However, if you have your own ISP you will want to customize the uninstall so that it does not remove any "shared" components that you may need.

  136. 1.  In Program Manager, Open the Netscape for ZD Net program group.  Double-click on the Uninstall icon.

  138. 2.  Scroll down in the Operation Record and find the entries for the following files:

  140. ole2.reg
  141. storage.dll
  142.  
  143. 3.  For each, change the State (in the lower left corner) to "Won't be undone."  This will prevent the uninstall
