- Welcome to D.D.C.'s Othelllo board-game. This game is based on the
- well-known Othello board-game, with additional features. You need not know
- how to play Othelllo, as the next paragraph explains the game.
- The object of Othelllo is to get as many of your color chips on the
- board as possible. This is accomplished by creating lines of your color on
- a board. The board is usually 8 squares long and 8 squares wide. The
- opening board will look like this:
- ┌───┬───┬───┬───┬───┬───┬───┬───┐ Player One goes first. (Surprise). He or
- │ │ │ │ │ │ │ │ │ she may only select a square at the end of
- ├───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┤ a series of the opponent's colored chips.
- │ │ │ │ │ │ │ │ │ This series must be in a straight line,
- ├───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┤ either horizontally, vertically, or
- │ │ │ │ │ │ │ │ │ diagonally, and there must be a chip of
- ├───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┤ player one's color at the opposite end.
- │ │ │ │ █ │ Θ │ A │ │ │ For instance, In order to make his first
- ├───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┤ move, player one (the "█"), might move to
- │ │ │ │ Θ │ █ │ │ │ │ square 'A'. This would create a line of
- ├───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┤ chips, with player one's chips on each end.
- │ │ │ │ │ │ │ │ │ This is how you move. At least one of the
- ├───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┤ opponents chips must be between your chips.
- │ │ │ │ │ │ │ │ │ You then turn over all of your opponent's
- ├───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┤ chips between your two thus gaining points.
- │ │ │ │ │ │ │ │ │ You may also flip any peices up, down, left
- └───┴───┴───┴───┴───┴───┴───┴───┘ right or diagonally between your chips.
-
- ┌───┬───┬───┬───┬───┬───┬───┬───┐ To help further explain this game, view the
- │ │ │ │ │ │ │ │ │ board below. Assume that it's player two's
- ├───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┤ turn (the "Θ"). The wisest move to make
- │ │ │ │ │ │ │ │ │ would be to place his chip in square B.
- ├───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┤ This would turn over his opponent's three
- │ │ │ │ │ │ │ │ │ chips in the corresponding horizontal line.
- ├───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┤ When looking at player one (the "█") it is
- │ B │ █ │ █ │ █ │ Θ │ │ │ │ wise for him to place his chip in square A,
- ├───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┤ thus gaining two chips from his opponent.
- │ │ A │ Θ │ Θ │ █ │ │ │ │ If a player cannot make a move that will
- ├───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┤ overturn any of his/her opponent's chips,
- │ │ │ │ │ │ │ │ │ he/she loses his/her turn. The game
- ├───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┤ continues until the board is full or until
- │ │ │ │ │ │ │ │ │ no player can make a valid move. Read the
- ├───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┼───┤ file OTHELLLO.DOC for more details.

- └───┴───┴───┴───┴───┴───┴───┴───┘ ******* NEW OPTIONS ********
-
- There are new options in this game of Othelllo. As you may have
- noticed in the main menu, you can configure the game for up to six players,
- or as little as one. You may choose the colors for the board, and also the
- size of the board. This is useful when you are playing large games or when
- you wish to control the length of the game. We reccomend you use a larger
- board than the standard 8 x 8 when there are more than two players. Have fun!
