NORWOODA.MOD - Norwood Memorial (OWD)
This scenery centers around my home town of Framingham, MA and the most
local significant airport, Hanscom Field in Bedford. There is a great
deal of detail in the Framingham area, including the shopping area known
locally as "The Golden Mile" which is a triangle enclosed by Route 9 to
the south, Speen Street to the east, and Route 30 to the north. This
should be pretty easy to find with its high concentration of buildings.
Included in this area is Shopper's World, one of the very first shopping
malls in the U.S. (noteable from the air for the round domed building on
the south end), Wonder Bread (where Twinkies come from!), and the
headquarters of Prime Computer, my one-time employer.
Hanscom Field is pretty accurate as I've been there a number of times
for airshows and was able to pull out some photos to work from.
Hanscom is a mixed use field as it is shared by Hanscom A.F.B. and
private users. The mode provided for Hanscom parks you in front of
one of the civilian buildings. The air force has no planes based here
however, but military planes do make visits for electronics
outfitting. The Raytheon building, one of the companies that works
closely with the Air Force, is visible across the runway as a large
gray building.
Norwood is also fairly detailed, but the accuracy is questionable as
I've never been there; the details were created based on the U.S.G.S.
maps I have. Marlboro really has little in the way of facilities as
it's a very small airfield; it's quite a challenge to land on too.
I've included Worcester out to the far west of the scenery, but the
accuracy here is pretty questionable. I hope to eventually get the
maps I need to get this correct as it's a fairly major airport.
I've pretty much left out Boston as Ron Bokleman's Logan scenery is so
well done. I have included Boston's two largest buildings, the Prudential
and the Hancock, as these can be seen from quite a distance. Another
noteable landmark is the set of four towers along Route 128 in Needham
which can be seen almost anywhere within the scenery. The highest of
these tops out at about 1200 feet.
Major roads included are Route 128 (also Route 95 for much of it), the
ring round around Boston; Route 9, the four lane road going from Boston
to Worcester; and Route 90 (Mass. Pike), the divided highway that goes
from Boston west to south of Worcester.
