Banner Printing Program - By R.E.B. Version 1.61C 04/28/86
REQUIREMENTS:
This program requires MS-DOS 2.x and up. It requires that you have
a printer, and a minimum of 128K of RAM.
FEATURES:
Multiple character fonts.
Single, Double, or Triple overprinting.
Double width printing up to 264 columns over two page widths.
Optional reverse printing mode.
Printer setup mode included.
Can be used on virtually *any* printer.
WARNING
Use of overprinting, reverse printing, or combinations of both can
cause serious damage to your printer due to overheating. If you
are printing a long banner using either of these modes, it is a
good idea to make sure that the printer has adequate ventilation.
The user assumes full responsibility for any harm that may come to
his printer from running this program!
BEFORE USE:
Because BANR supports fonts of varying densities and sizes, some
of the fonts contained in the program may require you to print
them at 132 characters per line (CPL). The minimum width will be
displayed in the Font Selection Menu when you run the program.
Most narrow carriage printers only print 80 CPL most of the time.
If have a narrow carriage printer and wish to use this program to
print a font that requires 132 CPL, you must first set the
printer up to print at 132 CPL This usually corresponds to 16.5
characters per inch (8" carriage * 16.5 CPI=132 CPL). In testing,
I have found that when 16.5 CPI is used, it is also a good idea to
print at 8 lines per inch.
USING THE PROGRAM:
After executing the program, you will be asked how many levels of
overprint you would like. The program supports double and triple
overprinting. Unless you have a fairly rugged high speed printer,
I can not recommend using these overprinting modes. The
Overprinting is accomplished by sending a carriage return (ASCII
13) without a linefeed in between lines to be overprinted. Nearly
all printers will support this format.
The Font Selection Menu will be displayed next. Each line contains
the name of a font followed by the minumum width for printing that
font. Choose the font you wish to use for printing by entering the
number to the left of the font name. Then, if the minumum width is
less than 132, you will be asked to enter the width to be used for
printing.
The program will next ask you to enter any special codes used to
set up your printer. You may enter as many as you want. Enter
them as decimal equivalents of ASCII characters, one on each line.
Enter a blank line when done. After sending setup codes, you can
send the printer a test line.
You are now ready to print banners! Enter your text when prompted
to do so. A list of characters available will be displayed on the
screen for your convenience. Before printing, the program will
locate any characters which are not supported in the font, and let
you re-enter your text.
If you wish your banner to be printed in reverse (white on black)
enter a '~' (tilde) at the end of the text line. The same warnings
as noted before for overprinting apply to reverse printing.
You may also choose to print a double height banner by putting a
'|' (vertical bar) at the end of the text line. This will result a
banner that is up to 264 characters across. The bottom half will
be printed first, followed by the top half. Each half will be the
same width as a regular banner. Registration marks will be printed
to aid you in assembly.
After both parts of the banner are printed, assemble as follows:
First, choose either the top or the bottom, and make an even fold
parallel to the registration marks at each end. You should fold
over one row of printing on the actual banner. Next, put the two
halves next to each other so that the registration marks are
parallel and do not overlap. The half that is folded should cover
the first row of the banner printing on the unfolded half. Now,
tape the two halves together at the ends, and turn them over. Tape
the pieces together from the back as needed making sure that the
pieces remain parallel. These assembly instructions will also be
printed on the banner.
In order to print a banner with both the double height and the
reverse options, simply enter '~|' at the end of the text. Order
of these special characters is not important, as long as they are
the last characters on the text entry line.
If you enter a '~' as the only character on the text entry line,
the font selection menu will appear, followed by the printer setup
mode. This gives you a chance to change fonts and printer setup
modes without exiting the program.
After printing a banner, you may enter text for another one, or
enter a blank line to exit to MS-DOS.
EXITING:
Should you wish to abort the program while it is running, type
control-C a few times to return to MS-DOS.
FOR THE FUTURE:
Additional character fonts.
Handling of MS-DOS devices other than just the printer.
Support of MS-DOS piping.
Good luck, I hope you enjoy this program.
