MAAACKJR.DOC This documentation
This file requires SD-12 (New York, Montreal, Halifax).
Nantucket was the whaling capital of the world in the early and
middle 19th century, and boasts a Whaling Museum (one of the
larger buildings in Nantucket Town on this file). Although the
whales are long gone, a couple are kept around as pets <G>, you
can see them (a mother and a baby) swimming down Nantucket
Harbor.
In addition to Nantucket Town at the end of the Harbor, the
island really has only two other villages: Madaket at the west
end, and Siasconset (always abbreviated to 'Sconset) at the east.
There are three lighthouses: Great Point, at the extreme north,
Sankaty Light north of 'Sconset, and Brant Point Light, in
Nantucket Town. Sesachacha Pond is on the east coast, just at the
OM for Runway 24 of the airport (you will see a hot air balloon
hovering above it, and a fishing dock).
Nantucket Town has, in addition to the museums, a fine collection
of colonial churches, lovely "Cape Cod" cottages, and a few
larger mansions. It is the ferry terminal; you will see one
arriving, and one departing, the latter probably for Woods Hole
and the former from Hyannis. The ship at the town pier may be the
old Nantucket Lightship. One of the chief interests of the town
is the Old Mill, to the southwest, a 1746 Dutch-style octagonal
windmill built with lumber from shipwrecks. One of many which
once existed, it is still grinding corn into meal.
There is nothing particularly distinctive about Nantucket
Memorial airport. It does have an ILS approach (109.1) to RY 24,
with the WAIVS NDB as the LOM (frequency 248). The ATIS frequency
is 126.6. The runways are 12-30 (3125 feet), 15-33 (3999), and
6-24 (6303). 24 has lighted edges at night, and all taxiways are
also lighted. There is another NDB at the west end of the Island,
near Madaket: Nantucket, TUK, frequency 194.
Fixes for ACK are the ACK VOR (116.2), @238 2.3 DME; HYA (114.7),
@181 28.4 DME; MVY (114.5 on SD-12), @124 26.3 DME; and PVD
(114.6), @129 67.7 DME. All of these, as well as the ILS, are
provided on SD-12.
This file was considerably enhanced with library objects using
Laemming Wheeler's SEE (both libraries 1 and 2). The runways
pretty well cover those on SD-12, but if you get some "bleeding"
you may want to eliminate the SD-12 runways with Chris Manrique's
ATPFIX.
The .mod file places you at the threshold of RY 24 in the stock
Cessna. Your com radio is set to the ACK ATIS, Nav1 to the ILS,
and Nav2 to the ACK VOR. It is fall, a particularly nice time to
see all the trees (a recent development; Nantucket used to be
practically barren). Since it is a small island and you can see
everything from everywhere, it's also fun to fly at night.
Set your static scenery memory to 23000 with 1;J;0 if it is now
less than that; there is no dynamic scenery. The center of the
file is at 17607N, 22314E, and the radius 40 nm, which should
allow this file to pick up nicely when flying from the Cape.
Indeed you may want to reduce that radius somewhat if you are
also working with a file which contain Hyannis, Martha's
Vineyard, or Hyannis. Most of the buildings in the file have a
range of 60 units (a little less than 10 nm), which should allow
them to show up properly without degrading frame rate; library
objects such as lighthouses have a longer range.
