Nashua, NH, is a thriving town in southern New Hampshire right on the
Massachusetts border. Boire field, though seemingly small with only
a single runway is normally a very busy general aviation airport with
lots of planes based there. This is probably helped by having Daniel
Webster College, with its aviation program and airplanes, based at
the field. Between the college and several active FBO's Boire Field
is rarely quiet.
Nashua itself is a mix of old and new. The old downtown area includes
brick factory buildings while the south side of town is mostly new
residential developments.
Just a few miles north of Nashua is Manchester, home of Manchester
Airport/Grenier Industrial Airpark. This is a medium sized airport
with regular jet service. It's busy enough that Manchester was made
an ARSA just last month so remember to get proper clearance before
travelling through this area!
Manchester itself is an old factory town with many huge brick factories
built along the banks of the Merrimack River. I don't have sufficiently
accurate maps of the area to position buildings correctly, but I've
added enough factory type buildings to give a proper feel to the city.
One of the most prominent scenery items is almost right between Nashua
and Manchester. The Budweiser brewery is a huge building and seems
even more so as it sits all alone in a giant field. You can't miss it
flying north of Nashua along the Merrimack River.
Nashua itself has a few of its many shopping malls included along with
one notable aviation related site: Boston Center, the FAA air traffic
control center for New England. It's not a very notable looking building
but word has it the tour they give is quite interesting.
Moving into Massachusetts two good landmarks to look for are the green
Tyngsboro bridge over the Merrimack River and the Wang Computer towers
in Lowell.
You should find sufficient roads to be able to navigate VFR through
the area. I've also added the Pease VORTAC which is missing from
SD-12 to complete the VORs that should be in the area. A number of
NDB's have been added as well. Nashua's ILS on runway 14 (109.7) has
been added. Manchester also has an ILS on runway 24 (109.10) but
that's included on SD-12.
