Documentation for: CAAVNYDB.SC1/.DY1 scenery
Developed using Microsoft Aircraft & Scenery Designer
Revised October 28, 1990
This scenery has been designed by David Bartholomew (71716,431).
It includes most of the San Fernando Valley, in Los Angeles County,
California.
The main scenery centers around Van Nuys airport. I have added: a more
detailed runway, with approach lighting; control tower; the Volpar
hangars; and some vehicles (fuel truck and airport police car) that
trundle around and look busy.
A few files to the east is Burbank Airport (more properly, Burbank /
Glendale / Pasadena Airport). I encountered some problems in designing
this, as the default scenery freeway lines do not seem accurate.
Rather than covering them up and laying out the freeways properly, I
decided to fudge a bit and move BUR slightly south. The terminal
building at BUR has the control tower right there, as in real life.
To the northeast of VNY lies Whiteman Airport. I tried to do this as
accurately as I could, having only been on the premises once. The
building next to the radio tower there is the Civil Air Patrol; the
other building is the airport offices and ever-present restaurant.
Just south of VNY is a golf course, so because you might see that up
close I stuck in some trees and the pro shop/restaurant building
there. To the south of that is the Sepulveda Flood Control Basin.
Oh, you see the little place about a mile southeast of VNY? That's my
house. That's me driving up and down the street in front. I have a
small mast for my ham antennas (VHF mainly), but ASD gave me a free
beacon light on this one.
The red buildings to the north of VNY are the Sepulveda Veterans
Administration Hospital, which is actually on a slight hill. I
couldn't include the hill and the buildings too, so the hill got left
out of the scenery.
I kept polygons to a minimum and tried not to use detailed streets as
much as I could, so only a few of the major streets are depicted.
Sherman Way goes into a tunnel underneath the VNY runway. I also added
the SPRR tracks going across the Valley.
The two buildings just east of the north end of VNY belong to the
folks who make Budweiser beer. Down the tracks a few miles east is the
Stroh's brewery.
I have two jets at BUR. One takes off every couple of minutes; the
other one makes an eastbound landing (not too good, I'll have to
improve on that).
There are numerous other buildings around to check out, some of which
are mentioned on the FAA Los Angeles TCA map (highly recommended). An
additional surprise, go take a sailplane over the Chevy plant in Van
Nuys or over the Lockheed plant in Burbank and see what weird effects
those factory roofs have!
I only added two additional radio navaids: the 370 NDB at Pacoima (the
tower inside Whiteman), and broadcast station KMPC 710 in North
Hollywood. The other radio towers in the north part of the Valley are
those of KGIL 1260, but you can't get that on your ADF gauge.
If you have any ideas, PLEASE leave mail on CompuServe [71716,431] or
on Prodigy (PPRJ09A). Let's not duplicate each others' work in this
area, maybe we can combine efforts to make this even better.
