Documentation for CAAEDWJB.ZIP (CompuServe name: CAAEDW.ZIP)
.ZIP file includes the following files:
CAAEDWJB.SC1 - ASD Scenery File
CAAEDWJB.DOC - This file
EDWRWY4.MOD - Mode file for startup at threshold of runway 04 at Edwards.
This file provides the basic layout for Edwards Air Force base and the NASA
Dryden Flight Research Center. The location was determined using the Palmdale
VOR in Scenery Disk No. 3, to locate the EDW VOR (116.4). Military approach
plates were then used to reference the distance and radial for placement of
the main runway at Edwards. From there, reference was made to the airport
diagram for Edwards and for the Rogers Lakebed in the approach plates (in DOD
Flight Information Publication-Terminal, Volume SW U.S. - High Altitude). For
the building and grounds layout at Dryden, to the north of the Air Force base,
I used a NASA aerial photograph as reference for the layout of the Dryden
buildings, though the building dimensions were approximated (using buses
parked in the parking lot!)
The Edwards VOR (116.4) is the only navaid in the area used in the file.
(There is a microwave landing system at Edwards, which the shuttle uses, but
obviously not available to us in FS-yet!)
I included approach lighting at the main Edwards runway, for reference
purposes; I have no information yet about the availability or type of
approach lighting at EDW.
This file is uploaded for those who just want to have the basic Edwards layout
to play with. I am developing a more complete file which will include the
procedures followed by the space shuttle in making its final approach to
Edwards, including the heading alignment curves (HACs) for Edwards runway 22
and Dryden landing strip 17. Probably not much more will be added to the
scenery file, but there will be new mode files and documentation, and possible
a dynamic file and demo file.
This is a great place to fool around with high performance aircraft! With
"runways" as long as 39,660 feet and as wide as 900 feet, you've got a lot of
room to maneuver on final! The Edwards concrete runway is no small fry, at
14,995 X 300 feet!
Enjoy, and let me know if you have any ideas about how to improve the file, or
any dynamic scenery or demo file ideas you might have.
