Requirements: MS Flight Simulator 4.0b or later
MS Aircraft & Scenery Designer for FS4
SubLogic Scenery Disk #9 STRONGLY RECOMMENDED
Okay folks, here it is, version 1.0 of my Kankakee scenery, with
more and better versions to come later. I simply don't have the
time right now to work on this scenery any more and won't for some
time, so I decided to release it the way it is......nothing fancy,
BUT -- the airports are as close to exact as I could make them,
using NOAA/FAA Airport/Facility directories and Instrument Approach
Proceedure manuals, as well as some aerial photos and other
materials which were most kindly supplied by Mr. John "I Love
SubLogic" Sandow. A private pilot and FlightSim junkie, he also
fielded many, many questions from yours truly via E-mail & voice.
His help has been instrumental. Whatta' dude!
The reason for this scenery? As far as I know, nobody has ever
done IKK with ASD. [Rant Mode ON] Also, SubLogic (a fitting name
and a WONDERFUL pun, if you think about it) screwed up and left out
the ILS for Kankakee in BOTH versions of FS4 *AND* SD-9, and left
the VOR itself out on SD-9, making IKK the Rodney Dangerfield of Sim
airports.....it gets no respect. Also, I cannot stand those sh*tty
little black & white runways that SubLogic half-assed scribbled
everywhere in the wrong places, sizes and layouts. I want real-looking
runways with real-looking approach lighting and navaids.
[Rant Mode OFF]
I started out just doing the IKK airport, trying to teach myself
how to use ASD. The manual that comes with ASD really SUCKS. It was
after MUCH trial and error that I finally got the hang of things.
Then, I decided that IKK needed some company, and all those tiny
little airports just south of Chicago seemed perfect for practicing
precision, stall-speed landings, as they are, for the most part,
narrow and short. Try Dwight, Rwy. 27....with a runway 21 feet
wide, yeah, I hope your aim is REAL good. <INCOMING!!>
I had originally included Clow Intl. Arpt. (Plainfield, Il) and
Lewis University Arpt. (Romeoville, Il), but they were too far
north of a sort-of "Line of Death" I drew on my map between Joliet
and Lansing airports. Same thing with Gary, In.. Too bad, as
they're really nice airports. This .SC1 file is centered just SW of
the Greater Kankakee Airport, with an auto-load radius of 35 miles
to minimize conflicts with Chicago-area scenery. Some airports
(Joliet, Pontiac, Dwight.....) extend beyond this radius.
In the next version, I plan to add highways for I-55, I-57 & I-80,
maybe a few other roads here and there and more buldings and lines
to the Kankakee polygon. Those things sure eat up bytes fast, not
to mention loading up ones' processor. (A 10-segment divided
highway eats 483 bytes! <OW!OW!OW!>) Also, I need to get a real map
of Kankakee, as the one I have is 20 years old and basically sucks.
Most of the runways in this scenery are actually asphalt, but
black runways disappear at night in FS4, even if you give them
bright white edges and dashed lines, so I made a compromise here --
I made all the hard runways a dark grey, which still shows up at
night. Turf runways are light green. IKK was the only airport to
have black runways, and that's because I had to lay a polygon under
it to cover the old default airport, so as long as I was at it....I
drew them in black. Unless otherwise noted, all runways are
asphalt. Not all airports which have fuel in real life have fuel
boxes here. At a 118 bytes each, I wasn't giving everyone fuel! At
39 bytes a pop, trees are rather sparse too.
Light grey edging was used to simulate LIRL (Low Intensity Runway
Lighting) and MIRL (Medium Intensity). Bright White was used to
simulate HIRL (High Intensity). Wherever possible, runway lighting
is 100% accurate, but this was not always possible as the
facilities directory doesn't say whether or not runways have end
lights (not all places have them), so some strips that don't have
runway end lights in real life will have them here. Oh well, it's
an imperfekt world, right? Deal with it.
I designed this scenery to lay over SD-9, although you *could* run
it with default scenery.....it'll look a bit strange, bridges where
there are no roads or rivers or whatever.....and your bearings will
shift 4 degrees (don't ask me which way, I don't remember)....but
it will work.
Those with SD-9 will want to remove the SD runways with APTFIX, a
neat little FS4 utility (Copyright(C)1990 by Chris Manrique) which
removes those sh*tty, inaccurate runways from your SubLogic Scenery
Disks. You can find it on any Flight-Sim BBS. Look for it on:
Jim's Fly-Inn BBS (312)881-1142 8N1 14.4k
Again, nothing fancy here. I added lines to those already existing
on SD-9 to represent roads. Ain't as pretty as a 4-lane highway,
but it also takes less memory and is much easier on one's
processor, something I tried to keep in mind as I laid this out on
my 486 Beast-Box. Bridges, polygons, trees, antenna towers and
various other bits of scenery are spread out in a 50 mile radius
around IKK. My old 286 handled this rather well.
No dynamic scenery here. I don't run it, so I don't write it.
(Slows down the frame rate, eats memory and chews up drive space)
Oh yeah, I included a special message for the world in this
scenery. I'm not gonna say what or where, just that you can't miss
it if you just happen to be in the vicinity. It can be read from
50,000 feet, so it's hard miss. <GrIn>
I've included 4 startup modes here: IKK Rwy 4, Dwight Rwy 27,
Joliet and Lansing. I've given the coordinates for the rest.
Xtra-Special Yahooz'!! go out to:
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Sir. Or Vice-Versa, I'm sure.
James Williams, Sysop of Jim's Fly-Inn BBS, for giving me access to
TONS of Xcellent FS4/ASD/AAF files. Great board! <plug> <plug>
Nels Anderson, Moderator of the RELAYNET FlightSim Conference, for
keeping the conference a nice, friendly, helpful place to visit.
All the other SimAir pilots and FS4 Junkies in the RELAYNET
