  3. You can use these tiles to slip your kids a minor geography
  4. lesson while they think they are having fun; or just enjoy
  5. playing MahJONGG 3.3 or 3.4 with them.

  7. "conus" = states of the Continental US; or more precisely,
  8. CONTIGUOUS Continental US, because of the 42 unique tile
  9. limitation in the system.  Plus, Alaska (including the Aleutians
  10. & Panhandle) would be HARD to fit on a 34x34 pixel drawing
  11. surface.
  12.  
  13. To conserve tiles, all of New England (6 states = CT, RI, MA, ME,
  14. NH, VT) is shown on a single tile;  and the two perfectly
  15. rectangular states (CO & WY) are represented by one tile.

  17. "conus" is provided in four types of tile-sets for MahJONGG 3.3
  18. or 3.4, as explained below.
  19.  
  20. Basic ConUS.til = states shown as black silhouettes on a grey
  21. field, with a single yellow pixel to indicate the approx.
  22. location of the capital.  Generally, the standard two-letter P.O.
  23. abbreviation for the state is shown in the upper right hand
  24. corner of the tile; and the name of the capital is shown at the
  25. bottom of the tile.  These tiles are provided in four versions:
  26.  
  27.      ConUS.til    = "basic", as described above.
  28.  
  29.      Conus-W.til  = Waterized version of the "basic" tile-set;
  30.                     with significant bodies of water in or
  31.                     bordering on states, frequently shown in
  32.                     blue.

  34.      Conus-C.til  = Colorized version of Conus-W, with states
  35.                     shown in various colors.  Since I thought
  36.                     this version was a little gaudy, I decided to
  37.                     at least tone down the color of the water by
  38.                     changing it from BRIGHT Blue to a Dull Grey-
  39.                     Blue.

  41.      A buddy of mine is pretty color blind.  When I showed him
  42.      the Conus-C tile-set, he said that he couldn't see the
  43.      water!  His name is McCall, hence . . . .

  45.      Mc-Conus.til = Conus-C with the water brightened back up
  46.                     again.
  47.  
  48.      Actually, I have a bit of a preference for Conus-W if I'm
  49.      not in a rush.  I think it looks better and it makes you
  50.      concentrate more on the SHAPE of the states.  But I'll have
  51.      to admit that the colors sure do help you locate the
  52.      matchable tiles a lot faster.  However, the heavy reliance
  53.      on color for ease of play make it less of a learning tool
  54.      than it can be.  Anyhow, use whichever suits you best.

  56.      I may fine-tune the tile shapes from time to time; if so,
  57.      I'll apply rev. level #'s to the ".til" filenames.

  59. NOTE that the states ARE NOT SHOWN TO SCALE, relative to each
  60. other.  This would have been impossible; compared to California,
  61. Delaware would be about the size of one pixel.

  63. The tiles of the two wildcard suits are shown with color coded
  64. borders, as a clue to which tiles can be matched-up.  (Note that
  65. this also gives a little advantage in that the color strata shows
  66. up when the side of a stack is exposed.)  Also, the state-shapes
  67. are left in Black in the 2 colorized versions.  If there's any
  68. doubt which wildcards can be matched up, just press F8; the 2
  69. wildcard suits are shown in the lower left & lower right of
  70. resulting screen.

  72. As I said before, you can use these tiles to slip your kids a
  73. minor geography lesson while they think they are having fun.  I
  74. know that making and "test driving" them has kind of
  75. unconsciously drilled some of those 2-letter abbreviations into
  76. my head; and refreshed my memory about capitals that I hadn't
  77. thought about since grade school.
