INSTALLATION VS. UPDATING
*******************************************************
MiG-29 installation
If you have MiG-29, you should run the MiG-29
install program. Type "INSTALL" at the DOS prompt.
This will install MiG-29 and update your version of
Falcon 3.0 (including Operation: Fighting Tiger if
you have it installed) to version 3.02.
--> Complete MiG-29 installation instructions are
printed on the MiG-29 Installation and Loading
Card included in your MiG-29 package. <--
The MiG-29 installer will create a file called
MIG29.EXE in your FALCON3 directory. Run this file
(by typing "MIG29" at the DOS prompt) instead of
FALCON3.EXE when you want to play MiG-29.
If you are just updating Falcon 3.0, run the Falcon
3.02 update program. Type "F3UPDATE" at the DOS
prompt. This will update Falcon 3.0 to version
3.02.
Who can update?
Any Falcon 3.0 owner can update to version 3.02.
Purchasers of MiG-29 are encouraged to distribute
copies of Disks 1 and 2, which contain the Falcon
3.02 update files. Disk 3 should not be distributed,
as it is only needed for installing MiG-29.
Should I update?
Yes, if you have any of the following versions of
Falcon 3.0: Falcon 3.0 (no suffix), Falcon 3.0a,
Falcon 3.0c, Falcon 3.0d, Falcon 3.0e, Falcon 3.01
(Operation: Fighting Tiger) or Falcon 3.01.1
(Operation: Fighting Tiger update).
Also, MiG-29 will only communicate with Falcon 3.02.
Earlier versions will fail to communicate properly.
WARNING: You should complete any campaigns you
intend to finish before updating. The Falcon 3.02
update process deletes all existing squadron files
and replaces them with new ones.
OPERATION: FIGHTING TIGER WARNING: Do not attempt to
install Operation: Fighting Tiger after updating to
version 3.02! If you buy Operation: Fighting Tiger
after you update to version 3.02, DELETE EVERYTHING
in your FALCON3 directory and reinstall from scratch
(Falcon 3.0, then Operation: Fighting Tiger, then
the 3.02 update). See the update instructions below.
What is included in these disks?
These disks contain both the MiG-29 program and the
Falcon 3.02 update. The INSTALL.EXE program installs
MiG-29 and updates Falcon 3.0 and Operation:
Fighting Tiger to version 3.02. The F3UPDATE.EXE
program only performs the 3.02 update for Falcon 3.0
and Operation: Fighting Tiger.
F3UPDATE only requires Disks 1 and 2, while INSTALL
requires all three disks.
The Falcon 3.02 update program will place a file
called "F3README.TXT" into your FALCON3 directory.
This text file contains a complete listing of all
features added to Falcon 3.0 since its original
release.
The MiG-29 install program will place F3README.TXT
and another file called "MGREADME.TXT" into your
FALCON3 directory. The MGREADME text file lists all
the features of MiG-29 not covered in the Falcon 3.0
or MiG-29 manuals, including some last-minute
changes.

FALCON 3.02 UPDATE INSTRUCTIONS
*******************************************************
1) Install Falcon 3.0 according to the instructions
provided with that game (unless it is already
installed).
2) Install Operation: Fighting Tiger, if you have
it, according to the instructions provided with
that game (unless it is already installed).
3) Insert MiG-29 Disk 1 into a 3.5" floppy drive.
4) At the DOS prompt, type "F3UPDATE."
5) On the screen which appears, you will be given
the choice to "Continue" or "Quit." Select
"Continue" to go on.
6) A warning appears, telling you that all your
squadrons will be deleted if you continue. You
are given the choice to "Continue" or "Quit."
Select "Continue" to go on with the Falcon 3.02
update.
7) The Falcon 3.02 update program now searches your
hard drive for Falcon 3.0. When it finds it, it
says "Falcon 3.0 found in:" followed by the path
to the directory containing your copy of Falcon
3.0. Edit this path if it is wrong or if you have
another copy of Falcon 3.0 you wish to update
instead of the one found.
8) At the bottom of the screen are four buttons:
"Install," "Search," "View" and "Quit." "Quit"
aborts the Falcon 3.02 update. "View" brings up
this Readme file. "Search" continues the search
for other copies of Falcon 3.0 by checking other
drives or directories. Select "Install" to
continue the Falcon 3.02 update.
9) The Falcon 3.02 updater will begin updating
Falcon 3.0 to version 3.02. You can abort the
Falcon 3.02 update by pressing CTRL-BREAK.
10) Partway through, your computer will beep and you
will be asked to insert Disk 2. You will then be
given the choice to "Continue..." or "Quit."
Remove Disk 1 and insert Disk 2 in the same drive
Disk 1 was in. Select the "Continue..." button.
When the Falcon 3.02 updater is finished, it will
beep. Press any key to exit to DOS.
Type "CHECKVER" at the DOS prompt. You should see
the following line (in addition to other
information, such as whether Operation: Fighting
Tiger or MiG-29 are installed and how much memory
you have available).
CHECKVER V1.0 - Find Falcon 3.0 & MiG-29 version numbers
Program Version Date Time Size

TROUBLESHOOTING
*******************************************************
If there are problems with the MiG-29 installer or
Falcon 3.02 updater, you will see one of several
possible error messages. These messages are listed
below.
Error messages
ERROR - NOT ENOUGH CONVENTIONAL MEMORY AVAILABLE
You do not have enough conventional memory free to
use the MiG-29 installer or Falcon 3.02 updater.
This message is extremely unlikely, since both the
MiG-29 installer and Falcon 3.02 updater only
require 250K of free conventional memory to run.
Refer to your Release Notes and Communications
Handbook from Falcon 3.0 for tips on managing your
memory.
ERROR - DISK SPACE NOT AVAILABLE ON DRIVE:
This message will be followed by the path to the
drive and directory to which you are attempting to
install MiG-29 or update Falcon 3.0. The solution
is to make sure you have enough free space on
your hard drive. The disk space you will need to
have free depends on what you have already
installed and whether you are updating to Falcon
3.02 or installing MiG-29.
MiG-29 installation
Falcon 3.0 and Operation: Fighting Tiger 5MB
Falcon 3.0 only 6MB
Falcon 3.02 update
Falcon 3.0 and Operation: Fighting Tiger 5MB
Falcon 3.0 only 6MB
ERROR - CANNOT LOCATE FILE (filename) ON DISK
This message will be followed by the name of
whatever disk you are trying to install to or
update from. The word "(filename)" above will be
replaced by whatever file the MiG-29 installer or
Falcon 3.02 updater is seeking. This message
appears most often when the wrong disk is put in
the drive. The solution is to switch floppy disks
so that the proper disk is being used.
If you have the correct disk in the floppy drive
and still get this message, write down what file
it is looking for and call Customer Support at
(510)522-1164.
ERROR - INVALID VERSION
This message appears if the MiG-29 installer or
Falcon 3.02 updater cannot find certain files
that should exist in a functioning, legitimate
copy of Falcon 3.0.
One likely possibility, especially if you have a
backup copy of FALCON3.EXE, is that the MiG-29
installer or Falcon 3.02 updater is trying to
install or update to a directory that only
contains FALCON3.EXE. If this is so, quit the
MiG-29 installation or Falcon 3.02 update and
restart it. When you are given the option to edit
the path it will install or update to, type in the
path to a full working copy of Falcon 3.0.
Another possibility is that your FALCON3 directory
has had some of its files removed. In this case,
the solution is to quit the MiG-29 installer or
Falcon 3.02 updater, delete all the files from
your FALCON3 directory (or whatever directory your
copy of Falcon 3.0 is in), and re-install Falcon
3.0 (followed by Operation: Fighting Tiger if you
have it). Then run the MiG-29 installer or Falcon
3.02 updater as appropriate.
ERROR - CANNOT INSTALL TO (drive, usually A: or B:)
This message appears if you try to install to a
floppy drive or if you try to install to drive A
or B. If you want to install to drive A or B, you
may have to use the Manual Installation procedure
below. Otherwise, the best solution is to be sure
that Falcon 3.0 is on a hard drive and that you
have specified the proper drive and directory for
MiG-29 installation.
DATA ERROR READING DRIVE (drive, usually A: or B:)
This message appears if there is a disk error on
one of your install or update disks. Call
Customer Support at (510)522-1164 for a
replacement disk.
