  29. INSTALLATION VS. UPDATING

  32.  MiG-29 installation
  33.    If you have MiG-29, you should run the MiG-29
  34.    install program. Type "INSTALL" at the DOS prompt.
  35.    This will install MiG-29 and update your version of
  36.    Falcon 3.0 (including Operation: Fighting Tiger if
  37.    you have it installed) to version 3.02.
  38.

  40.      printed on the MiG-29 Installation and Loading
  41.      Card included in your MiG-29 package. <--

  43.    The MiG-29 installer will create a file called
  44.    MIG29.EXE in your FALCON3 directory. Run this file
  45.    (by typing "MIG29" at the DOS prompt) instead of 
  46.    FALCON3.EXE when you want to play MiG-29.
  47.  
  48.    If you are just updating Falcon 3.0, run the Falcon
  49.    3.02 update program. Type "F3UPDATE" at the DOS
  50.    prompt. This will update Falcon 3.0 to version 
  51.    3.02.
  52.  
  53.  Who can update?
  54.    Any Falcon 3.0 owner can update to version 3.02.
  55.    Purchasers of MiG-29 are encouraged to distribute
  56.    copies of Disks 1 and 2, which contain the Falcon
  57.    3.02 update files. Disk 3 should not be distributed,
  58.    as it is only needed for installing MiG-29.
  59.  
  60.  Should I update?
  61.    Yes, if you have any of the following versions of
  62.    Falcon 3.0: Falcon 3.0 (no suffix), Falcon 3.0a,
  63.    Falcon 3.0c, Falcon 3.0d, Falcon 3.0e, Falcon 3.01
  64.    (Operation: Fighting Tiger) or Falcon 3.01.1 
  65.    (Operation: Fighting Tiger update).
  66.  
  67.    Also, MiG-29 will only communicate with Falcon 3.02.
  68.    Earlier versions will fail to communicate properly.
  69.  
  70.    WARNING: You should complete any campaigns you
  71.    intend to finish before updating. The Falcon 3.02
  72.    update process deletes all existing squadron files
  73.    and replaces them with new ones.
  74.  
  75.    OPERATION: FIGHTING TIGER WARNING: Do not attempt to
  76.    install Operation: Fighting Tiger after updating to
  77.    version 3.02! If you buy Operation: Fighting Tiger
  78.    after you update to version 3.02, DELETE EVERYTHING
  79.    in your FALCON3 directory and reinstall from scratch
  80.    (Falcon 3.0, then Operation: Fighting Tiger, then
  81.    the 3.02 update). See the update instructions below.

  83.  What is included in these disks?
  84.    These disks contain both the MiG-29 program and the 
  85.    Falcon 3.02 update. The INSTALL.EXE program installs 
  86.    MiG-29 and updates Falcon 3.0 and Operation: 
  87.    Fighting Tiger to version 3.02. The F3UPDATE.EXE 
  88.    program only performs the 3.02 update for Falcon 3.0 
  89.    and Operation: Fighting Tiger.
  90.  
  91.    F3UPDATE only requires Disks 1 and 2, while INSTALL 
  92.    requires all three disks.
  93.  
  94.    The Falcon 3.02 update program will place a file
  95.    called "F3README.TXT" into your FALCON3 directory.
  96.    This text file contains a complete listing of all
  97.    features added to Falcon 3.0 since its original
  98.    release.

  100.    The MiG-29 install program will place F3README.TXT
  101.    and another file called "MGREADME.TXT" into your
  102.    FALCON3 directory. The MGREADME text file lists all
  103.    the features of MiG-29 not covered in the Falcon 3.0
  104.    or MiG-29 manuals, including some last-minute
  105.    changes.

  108. FALCON 3.02 UPDATE INSTRUCTIONS
  109. *******************************************************
  110.  
  111.    1) Install Falcon 3.0 according to the instructions
  112.       provided with that game (unless it is already
  113.       installed).
  114.  
  115.    2) Install Operation: Fighting Tiger, if you have
  116.       it, according to the instructions provided with
  117.       that game (unless it is already installed).
  118.  
  119.    3) Insert MiG-29 Disk 1 into a 3.5" floppy drive.
  120.  
  121.    4) At the DOS prompt, type "F3UPDATE."
  122.  
  123.    5) On the screen which appears, you will be given
  124.       the choice to "Continue" or "Quit." Select
  125.       "Continue" to go on.
  126.  
  127.    6) A warning appears, telling you that all your
  128.       squadrons will be deleted if you continue. You
  129.       are given the choice to "Continue" or "Quit."
  130.       Select "Continue" to go on with the Falcon 3.02
  131.       update.
  132.  
  133.    7) The Falcon 3.02 update program now searches your
  134.       hard drive for Falcon 3.0. When it finds it, it
  135.       says "Falcon 3.0 found in:" followed by the path
  136.       to the directory containing your copy of Falcon
  137.       3.0. Edit this path if it is wrong or if you have
  138.       another copy of Falcon 3.0 you wish to update
  139.       instead of the one found.
  140.  
  141.    8) At the bottom of the screen are four buttons:
  142.       "Install," "Search," "View" and "Quit." "Quit"
  143.       aborts the Falcon 3.02 update. "View" brings up
  144.       this Readme file. "Search" continues the search
  145.       for other copies of Falcon 3.0 by checking other
  146.       drives or directories. Select "Install" to
  147.       continue the Falcon 3.02 update.
  148.  
  149.    9) The Falcon 3.02 updater will begin updating
  150.       Falcon 3.0 to version 3.02. You can abort the
  151.       Falcon 3.02 update by pressing CTRL-BREAK.
  152.  
  153.   10) Partway through, your computer will beep and you
  154.       will be asked to insert Disk 2. You will then be
  155.       given the choice to "Continue..." or "Quit."
  156.       Remove Disk 1 and insert Disk 2 in the same drive
  157.       Disk 1 was in. Select the "Continue..." button.
  158.  
  159.    When the Falcon 3.02 updater is finished, it will
  160.    beep. Press any key to exit to DOS.
  161.  
  162.    Type "CHECKVER" at the DOS prompt. You should see
  163.    the following line (in addition to other
  164.    information, such as whether Operation: Fighting
  165.    Tiger or MiG-29 are installed and how much memory
  166.    you have available).

  177.    If there are problems with the MiG-29 installer or
  178.    Falcon 3.02 updater, you will see one of several
  179.    possible error messages. These messages are listed
  180.    below.
  181.  
  182.  Error messages
  183.    ERROR - NOT ENOUGH CONVENTIONAL MEMORY AVAILABLE
  184.      You do not have enough conventional memory free to
  185.      use the MiG-29 installer or Falcon 3.02 updater.
  186.      This message is extremely unlikely, since both the
  187.      MiG-29 installer and Falcon 3.02 updater only
  188.      require 250K of free conventional memory to run.
  189.      Refer to your Release Notes and Communications
  190.      Handbook from Falcon 3.0 for tips on managing your
  191.      memory.
  192.  
  193.    ERROR - DISK SPACE NOT AVAILABLE ON DRIVE:
  194.      This message will be followed by the path to the
  195.      drive and directory to which you are attempting to
  196.      install MiG-29 or update Falcon 3.0. The solution
  197.      is to make sure you have enough free space on
  198.      your hard drive. The disk space you will need to
  199.      have free depends on what you have already
  200.      installed and whether you are updating to Falcon
  201.      3.02 or installing MiG-29.

  213.    ERROR - CANNOT LOCATE FILE (filename) ON DISK
  214.      This message will be followed by the name of
  215.      whatever disk you are trying to install to or
  216.      update from. The word "(filename)" above will be
  217.      replaced by whatever file the MiG-29 installer or
  218.      Falcon 3.02 updater is seeking. This message
  219.      appears most often when the wrong disk is put in
  220.      the drive. The solution is to switch floppy disks
  221.      so that the proper disk is being used.
  222.  
  223.      If you have the correct disk in the floppy drive
  224.      and still get this message, write down what file
  225.      it is looking for and call Customer Support at
  226.      (510)522-1164.
  227.  
  228.    ERROR - INVALID VERSION
  229.      This message appears if the MiG-29 installer or
  230.      Falcon 3.02 updater cannot find certain files
  231.      that should exist in a functioning, legitimate
  232.      copy of Falcon 3.0.
  233.  
  234.      One likely possibility, especially if you have a
  235.      backup copy of FALCON3.EXE, is that the MiG-29
  236.      installer or Falcon 3.02 updater is trying to
  237.      install or update to a directory that only
  238.      contains FALCON3.EXE. If this is so, quit the
  239.      MiG-29 installation or Falcon 3.02 update and
  240.      restart it. When you are given the option to edit
  241.      the path it will install or update to, type in the
  242.      path to a full working copy of Falcon 3.0.
  243.  
  244.      Another possibility is that your FALCON3 directory
  245.      has had some of its files removed. In this case,
  246.      the solution is to quit the MiG-29 installer or
  247.      Falcon 3.02 updater, delete all the files from
  248.      your FALCON3 directory (or whatever directory your
  249.      copy of Falcon 3.0 is in), and re-install Falcon
  250.      3.0 (followed by Operation: Fighting Tiger if you
  251.      have it). Then run the MiG-29 installer or Falcon
  252.      3.02 updater as appropriate.
  253.  
  254.    ERROR - CANNOT INSTALL TO (drive, usually A: or B:)
  255.      This message appears if you try to install to a
  256.      floppy drive or if you try to install to drive A
  257.      or B. If you want to install to drive A or B, you
  258.      may have to use the Manual Installation procedure
  259.      below. Otherwise, the best solution is to be sure
  260.      that Falcon 3.0 is on a hard drive and that you
  261.      have specified the proper drive and directory for
  262.      MiG-29 installation.
  263.  
  264.    DATA ERROR READING DRIVE (drive, usually A: or B:)
  265.      This message appears if there is a disk error on
  266.      one of your install or update disks. Call
  267.      Customer Support at (510)522-1164 for a
  268.      replacement disk.
  269.  
  270.  Manual MiG-29 installation
  271.    If you are having trouble installing MiG-29, you can
  272.    manually perform the MiG-29 installation using one 
  273.    of the following procedures. Follow the instructions
  274.    appropriate to your setup, as different files are
  275.    needed depending on what is already installed on
  276.    your system. All directions assume you are
  277.    installing from floppy drive A to the FALCON3 
  278.    directory on drive C. If you are using different 
  279.    drives or directories, substitute as appropriate.

  281.    To install MiG-29 with Falcon 3.0 and Operation:
  282.    Fighting Tiger already installed:
  283.  
  284.    - Insert Disk 1 in drive A.
  285.    - At the A: prompt, type the following:
  286.        COPY GOPATCH.EXE C:\FALCON3 <Enter>
  287.    - Insert Disk 2 in drive A.
  288.    - At the A: prompt, type the following:
  289.        COPY CHECKOFT.RTP C:\FALCON3 <Enter>
  290.        COPY 302PATCH.RTP C:\FALCON3 <Enter>
  291.        COPY ASIAPAT.RTP C:\FALCON3 <Enter>
  292.        COPY MIGPAT2.RTP C:\FALCON3 <Enter>
  293.        COPY 302ARM.RTP C:\FALCON3\ARMSDATA <Enter>
  294.        COPY MIGMUSIC.RTP C:\FALCON3\MUSIC <Enter>
  295.    - Insert Disk 3 in drive A.
  296.    - At the A: prompt, type the following:
  297.        COPY MIGPAT1.RTP C:\FALCON3 <Enter>

  300.    - You will now be at a C: or C:\FALCON3 prompt. Type
  301.      the following to start the MiG-29 install:

  326.  Manual updating to Falcon 3.02
  327.    If you are having trouble updating to Falcon 3.02,
  328.    you can manually perform the Falcon 3.02 update 
  329.    using one of the following procedures. Follow the
