SAN FRANCISCO INTERNATIONAL VISUAL APPROACHES
SFO has two published visual approaches among it's Instrument Approach
Procedures, the "Quiet Bridge" visual for runway 28R and a companion "Tipp
Toe" visual for 28L. Whenever possible, arriving commercial traffic will
use one of these for final approach. As implied, simultaneous parallel
visual approaches often are in progress, and airline captains will alert
their passengers to the fact that "... the aircraft some of you may notice
off our left(right) wing is on an approach to a parallel runway, which is
normal and nothing to be concerned about." Runway 28L is used mostly by
traffic arriving from Los Angeles, and 28R by just about everyone else.
SFO28RQU.MOD sets you up for the Quiet Bridge Visual RWY 28R approach.
You are to remain on course maintaining 4000' until you intercept the 095
radial from SFO VOR (115.8). Then turn right heading 275. Descend to and
maintain 1900' until after crossing BRIJJ (the outer marker and NDB, freq.
379, on the San Mateo Bridge). After BRIJJ, fly the ILS for 28R (111.7).
If you want company, load SFOVISUL.DY1. It provides a stream of
arriving 767 traffic flying the "Tipp Toe" visual approach to 28L. This is
a somewhat more complex approach, which involves both the SFO and OAK VORs.
SFO28LTT.MOD sets you up to fly the "Tipp Toe" approach, yourself. At
first, THE ILS FOR 28L MAY BE UNRELIABLE on this approach. Your initial
fix is the MENLO Intersection at the crossing of the 038 radial from
Woodside VOR (113.9) and the 151 radial from Oakland VOR (116.8). Fly
heading 331, maintaining 4000' until turning inbound on the 101 radial from
SFO (115.8). Cross BRIJJ (see above) at 1900' or above. Then fly the ILS
for 28L (109.5).
Runway 28R has a CAT III approach approved for its ILS, and the
CAASFOKF.SC1 file includes the necessary inner marker. To fly this
approach you really need the radar altimeter of the 747-200, but it can be
done (in FS ONLY!) in your Cessna if you are good at tracking the glide-
slope. Use the SFO28LTT.MOD with an overcast from 100' to 6000' and give
it a try. Fly heading 151 (actually inbound to OAK VOR) until intercepting
the loaclizer (111.7). Turn inbound heading 281. Descend to and maintain
1800' until BRIJJ. After BRIJJ your measured altitudes must be 236' at the
middle marker and 112' at the inner. Then its DECISION TIME.
Have fun; this is how the big boys do it all the time.
