AIRPORT DIRECTORY UPDATE
1. TUL - Tulsa International Airport
Tulsa, OK
14917N 13778E
Alt. 676
RWY 17L - 35R 12002 x 196 ILS 109.1/17L - 109.2/35R
RWY 17R - 35L 5497 x 147
RWY 8 - 26 7694 x 147
Fuel Depot provided
Tulsa International is Tulsa's main airport, serving about a dozen air
carriers plus aerospace facilities for McDonnell Douglas, Rockwell Intl
and American Airlines. Military oriented pilots will be disappointed
with Tulsa, as the city has few military facilities other than an Air
National Guard factility and an Army National Guard helicopter base at
the NE corner of the airport. Although the largest jets like 747s can
land at Tulsa International, in the Tulsa Intl mode you will be in the
Learjet.
2. JNK - Richard Lloyd Jones Airport
Jenks, OK
14839N 13742E
Alt. 639
RWY 1L - 19R 4802 x 150 ILS 109.4/1L - 109.3/19R
RWY 1R - 19L 4802 x 150
RWY 13 - 31 3002 x 100
Fuel Depot provided
Jones Airport has heavy civil air traffic - mostly single engine planes
- and is a popular private pilot training center. The busiest airport
in Oklahoma, Learjets can use Jones Airport, too. In the Jones Airport
mode you will find yourself in the Learjet.
3. OWP - William Pogue Airport
Sand Springs, OK
14907N 13681E
Alt. 889
RWY 17 - 35 4102 x 150
NDB 362
Fuel Depot provided
Pogue airport is a tiny facility near the west Tulsa suburb of Sand
Springs. Pogue is one of the state's oldest airports, and strictly
caters to private pilots. In the Pogue Airport mode you will find
yourself at the controls of the Beechcraft Starship, which can use the
airport without much trouble but is actually too funky looking for the
quiet crowd at Pogue.
OTHER NOTES
This represents my efforts to reasonably simulate the local scenery in Tulsa,
OK. As any Tulsa local could tell you, it isn't perfect - but then again,
perfectionists are doomed to a life of eternal hell since the world is less
than perfect and they're only happy when it is....
A caveat: As you roll north down Runway 35R at Tulsa International Airport,
by the time you reach the northernmost third of the runway you'll discover
the whole city and airport actually disappears (!) from the Scenery Disk,
leaving you in the middle of nowhere. This appears to be because Scenery
Disk #1 ends at that point, which seems ridiculous to me. I have managed to
partially solved the problem by rewriting Runway 17L-35R in the Scenery
File provided with this so as not to catch you totally offguard, but since
the problem doesn't occur on the other runways I have left them unchanged.
Note that said Runway 17L-35R is a ridiculous 20,000 ft. long (!), but I
have reduced it to a slightly less ridiculous 15,000 ft. instead - oh well,
if we ever get a simulated copy of the Space Shuttle on Flight Simulator, you
could always land it at TUL!
Share your questions, comments, innuendoes and sarcasm with me by E-mail or
on the CIS Gamers Forum. Thank you for trying out this scenery set.
