  2.       CCP/M Meeting Notes, July-August 1988

  4. The summer is at its mid-point and it's time to 
  5. think about our organization...
  6.  
  7. I'll be reserving the Newington Public Library for 
  8. the second Tuesday of August, August 9th, from 
  9. 6:00 to 9:00 PM.  If you want to be part of this 
  10. general planning meeting, put this date on your 
  11. calendar.
  12.  
  13. With summer comes a traditionally lower profile 
  14. for computer clubs.  CCP/M skipped a meeting  in 
  15. July.  It was a needed break, giving us a chance 
  16. to enjoy the summer and think about things other 
  17. than computers.
  18.  
  19. I've been working on a few things these last few 
  20. weeks.  I've read a book called "CHAOS" and  have 
  21. made the first move toward forming a consulting 
  22. business (two hopefully unrelated activities...) 
  23. "CHAOS", by James Gleick, is about "fractals" and 
  24. "self-similar" phenomena and is a fascinating and 
  25. readable book.  Weather, economic systems, 
  26. coastlines and countless other things are shown to 
  27. be governed by common rules.  The business is 
  28. still in a formative stage but will involve 
  29. consulting and training materials (video, 
  30. floppies, manuals, courseware etc.) for small 
  31. computer users (8 bit of course).
  32.  
  33. Richard Steadman has the CCP/M PD software library 
  34. disks.  He'll be copying them to Royal formatted 
  35. floppies.  Or will be trying to anyway.  The 
  36. Kaypro he's got is failing regularly despite two 
  37. visits to Warren Labs.  Very frustrating indeed.  
  38. Richard's got a couple of ideas on how to track 
  39. down what's wrong.  Will be asking Jeff Moore to 
  40. take a look at it in a week or so if Richard has 
  41. no luck.  We've got MEX running on the Royal.  New 
  42. CCP/M member Dr. Charles Battista of Buffalo, NY 
  43. called me and wanted to know what CCP/M was all 
  44. about.  I sent him a "starter kit" and he sent us 
  45. MEX.  This is Ron Fowler's Modem EXective program 
  46. and is preferred by many over IMP.  The overlay 
  47. used was adapted from M7DA-1.ASM, a MODEM7 overlay 
  48. and as such needs "MEX"ifying.  YOU President 
  49. Daryl Gehlbach will be looking at this.
  50.  
  51. Daryl visited me recently and we tried to install 
  52. WordStar 4 on the Royal.  We did not succeed but I 
  53. learned quite a few things about WordStar 4 in the 
  54. process.  An ongoing effort will be conducted on 
  55. line on the bulletin board to solve this problem.  
  56. As soon as I get a chance I'll put up the file we 
  57. created called SETTINGS which contains all the 
  58. settings we currently have installed and based on 
  59. them, the PATCH.LST file etc. etc. we'll lick this 
  60. one yet.  As Daryl suggests, a FOG article on this 
  61. would be real nice.  (The Mouse House is limping 
  62. along on a Kaypro II with 2 191k floppies now; 
  63. still adequate for messaging and small file 
  64. transfer, but nothing like the hard disk Z system 
  65. which is down for repairs (that's two computers I 
  66. own that don't boot...))

  68. Daryl and I discussed the Newsletter as well.  He 
  69. indicated to me that Walt will not be co-editing 
  70. in 88-89 by choice.  This leaves the CCP/M YOU 
  71. Newsletter editor(s) position open.  This will be 
  72. one of the many jobs that will need to be filled 
  73. in the near future by our organizations.  Daryl 
  74. and Jim Taylor have both indicated to me that they 
  75. have some interest in helping out in this capacity 
  76. but we need to firm this up.  Daryl mentioned the 
  77. need for a consistent newsletter, one with monthly 
  78. columns you can count on.  As contrasted with 
  79. recent issues which, though interesting perhaps, 
  80. were somewhat unpredictable in content  (for which 
  81. you may thank/blame me in part!)  Timely and 
  82. focused and brief.  I believe that what's needed.
  83.  
  84. Rick Swenton has offered to speak at a future 
  85. CCP/M meeting on a topic of our chosing.  As has 
  86. Glen Gross.  Let's talk about elected officers, 
  87. the future/demise of CCP/M etc. etc. in August and 
  88. then move on/over after that.
  89.  
  90. I have indicated I will not run for President in 
  91. 88-89.  This is not to say I won't work for the 
  92. group and be quite active.  I would however like 
  93. to take a more supportive role for the coming year 
  94. and see others take the leadership position.  It's 
  95. really not that much work.  Give yourself a chance 
  96. to edit a newsletter, call a meeting, etc.  See 
  97. you at 6:00 August 9th at the planning meeting.

  99. PS.  Royal Product Support has made available to 
  100. CCP/M 3 drives.  They continue to promise 3 to 5 
  101. complete systems for a low price.  They also do 
  102. not return my phone calls.  New members (or soon 
  103. to be) Ruth Gorneault and Evelyn Straub have 
  104. expressed an interest in owning the second drive.  
  105. I will arrange that they get same in the coming 
  106. week.  Richard Steadman did the conversion and 
  107. cable work on these drives and for this CCP/M is 
  108. very grateful.
