  3. As with most of his plays Shakespeare did not invent the
  4. story of Romeo and Juliet himself.
  5. His genius lay not in creating an original plot but in
  6. giving new life and meaning to already existing stories.

  8. The story of Romeo and Juliet which many people believe is
  9. based on a true incident was first known as an Italian
  10. novel early in the 16th century.
  11. The story was well-known in Europe and before long it was
  12. turned into a long poem by a man called Arthur Brooke.

  14. It seems highly likely that Shakespeare knew Brooke's poem and
  15. that he used the details of it to form the basis of his play.

  17. The poem by Brooke was the best-known version of the story in
  18. English and the events ofShakespeare's version are largely the
  19. same as in the poem.
  20. However Shakespeare did make some changes for dramatic effect.

  22. For instance he speeds up the play to take place within a few
  23. days whereas in the poem the action takes a few months.
  24. Also noticeable are the characters of the Nurse and Mercutio
  25. who take on much greater importance in Shakespeare's play.

  27. A final change is that he does not end the tragedy with the
  28. death of the two lovers. Instead he shows how their deaths 
  29. serve to end the feud between the two families.
