  5. In Mantua Romeo is in a good mood until Balthasar his servant
  6. arrives with news from Verona that Juliet is dead.
  7. Unaware of Friar Lawrence's scheme Romeo despairs and plans
  8. to end his life. He persuades an apothecary to sell him poison.

  10. COMMENTARY
  11. Romeo's initial good humour is in contrast to what follows.
  12. His outburst

  19. Friar John explains to Friar Lawrence why he was unable to
  20. deliver the message to Romeo.
  21. Alarmed Friar Lawrence decides to go to the vault alone to
  22. fetch Juliet out when she awakes.

  24. COMMENTARY
  25. A scene of explanation which also fills in the time of Romeos
  26. journey.
  27. Once again Fate or Chance has taken a hand in the events of
  28. the plot.

  32. Paris has come to the graveyard to lay flowers on Juliets tomb.
  33. Romeo also arrives to enter the vault.
  34. Paris suspects him of further wrong-doing and challenges him.
  35.  
  36. Romeo tries to avoid fighting but is forced to kill Paris. He
  37. takes his body into the vault.
  38. There he marvels at Juliets beauty even in death and taking
  39. the poison quickly dies.

  41. Friar Lawrence arrives at the tomb and finds Romeos body just
  42. as Juliet is waking from her drugged sleep.

  46. Juliet refuses to leave with the Friar who runs away in fear.
  47. Finding Romeo has left no poison she stabs herself with his
  48. dagger.
  49.  
  50. The watch arrives too late and finally all the main characters
  51. gather at the tomb where the truth of the sad story is pieced
  52. together.
  53. Friar Lawrence is pardoned but the Prince chastises the two
  54. families. Capulet and Montague both vow that they will end
  55. their feud forever. The Prince concludes:
  56. never was a story of more woe
  57. Than this of Juliet and her Romeo.
