Qn 2. Describe the events leading to the death of Boxer and
say why this incident is of major importance in the novel.
Para 1. Boxer's hard work/loyalty - an inspiration to others.
Para 2. Boxer queries some of Squealer's propaganda -
Napoleon's dogs attack Boxer - he doesn't even realise.
Para 3. Boxer is overworked due to his own sense of duty.
Para 4. Boxer's health starts to fail - he looks forward to
honorable retirement.
Para 5. Boxer collapses - is sent to knackers - too weak to
break out of van.
Para 6. Important because - Orwell shows cruelty and
manipulation of leaders under this kind of system.
Conclusion - clever build-up of Boxer's good qualities to
emphasise the tragedy of his death.

Qn. 4 Trace the changing relationship between Snowball and
Napoleon.
Para 1. Equals - the only two boars on the farm - brief
description - together with Squealer formalised Major's
teachings into Animalism.
Para 2. S. and N. never agree during Sunday debates - stormy
arguments.
Para 3. N. ignored Snowball's committees - disputes grew more
bitter - each had a following.
Para 4. S. plans windmill - N. urinates on the plans - animals
vote for Snowball but Napoleon's fierce dogs drive him off the
farm.

Para. 5 Snowball never seen again but N. frequently uses him as
a scapegoat for anything that goes wrong. S. is declared to be
a traitor etc.
Conclusion - two strong personalities - quickly in conflict -
the more ruthless practical Napoleon emerges triumphant.
Qn 5. Briefly describe three events which you found sad or
disturbing in the novel. For each give reasons for your choice.
Para 1. The killing of 4 pigs 3 hens etc. after they confess to
various 'crimes'
Para 2. Reasons - animals killing animals; obvious falsity of
confessions; sheer violence.

Para 3. Boxer's betrayal by pigs - sent to his death they use
money to buy alcohol.
Para 4. Sad because of Boxer's gentle loyal nature. Disturbing
because he was perhaps the most valuable asset of the farm.
Para 5. The ending - Animals can no longer tell the difference
between pigs and humans.
Para 6. Shows inevitable result of revolution - power is
returned to the hands of a few who abuse it just as the
previous rulers had.
Conclusion - sum up reasons for choosing these three incidents.

Qn 10. Compare and contrast the two battles which take place in
the novel.
Para 1. B. of Cowshed attackers led by Jones + men from Foxwood
+ Pinchfield. Animals follow Snowball's plan - win brilliant
tactical victory.
Para 2. Details of battle. All animals fight bravely few
casualties. High spirits after success.
Para 3. B. of Windmill - led by Frederick and his men. Much
more serious and confident attack. Animals finally win victory
but at high cost.
Para 4. Details of Battle - humans at first victorious -
destroy windmill - enraged animals drive them out - several
deaths and many injuries - animals remain downhearted.
Conclusion - Very few similarities many differences.
