CHAPTER SEVEN
The boys continue their search. Ralph daydreams of his home
and Simon predicts that he will be rescued one day.
They see a pig and Ralph is caught up by the thrill of the
hunt. He joins in as the boys mime hunting with Robert as the
'pig' even though Robert is hurt.
Their search takes them up the mountain. Simon returns to tell
Piggy and the others what is happening.
Eventually Jack Ralph and Roger creep to the mountain-top but
in the gloom the parachutist appears to be a great ape and
they flee in terror.

CHAPTER EIGHT
Back at the assembly place Jack calls a meeting of the
frightened boys. He challenges Ralph's leadership and accuses
him of being a coward. However no-one supports him and he
storms off with a childish outburst.
Piggy is glad to see Jack go. He solves one problem by
suggesting that they should build a new fire on the beach. As
they work on this most of the choir members sneak off to join
Jack.
Jack and his hunters catch and savagely kill a large sow. Jack
decides to cut off the pig's head and leave it on a stick as
an offering for the 'Beast'.

Jack and his followers raid Ralph's party for fire to cook
their kill. Jack announces a feast and says they may join in.
Ralph calls a meeting but most of the boys can only see the
fun that Jack's tribe are having and are tempted by the
thought of meat.
Meanwhile Simon hallucinates a conversation with the pig's
head 'the Lord of the Flies.' Eventually he blacks out
escaping the threats and temptations of the 'Beast'.

CHAPTER NINE
Simon awakes and staggers off up the mountain. Despite feeling
sick he is determined to find out the truth.
Finding the body he releases the tangled parachute cords and
hurries off to tell the others that the 'Beast' is harmless
and horrible.
A storm is brewing and Piggy and Ralph eventually join all the
other boys at Jack's feast.
As the storm gets worse Jack tells the frightened boys to
dance. In the midst of their ritual chant Simon staggers into
the circle. Before he can cry out his discovery he is savagely
killed by the mob.
Simon's body is gently floated out to sea by the tide.
