CHAPTER ONE
A group of schoolboys evacuating from a nuclear war are
stranded on a Pacific island when their plane crashes.
We first meet Ralph and Piggy who discover a conch-shell
which they blow leading to the appearance of more boys.
Last to arrive are Jack and his choir. The boys vote for Ralph
to be their chief and he selects Jack and Simon to accompany
him on a scouting trip.
The three boys soon discover that they are indeed on an island
and that there is ample food and water available.
In fact the whole thing seems like a thrilling adventure to
them.

CHAPTER TWO
Ralph calls an assembly to tell all the boys what they have
discovered. One small boy raises fears of a 'snake-thing' he
claims to have seen.
Ralph suggests lighting a signal fire and the boys excitedly
scramble up the mountain and use Piggy's glasses to make a
fire.
In the rush the fire is allowed to spread and burns out of
control. Piggy is scornful of their childish behaviour and
points out that one small boy is missing presumably burnt to
death.

CHAPTER THREE
Some time later Ralph and Jack argue about whether priority
should be given to building huts or hunting pigs for meat.
Jack seems obsessed with hunting while Ralph is discovering
the difficulties of being responsible for all the children.
As the two of them patch up their quarrel Simon steals off to
a secret place he has found in the jungle pausing only to help
the littluns pick fruit.
