  3. CHAPTER ONE
  4. A group of schoolboys evacuating from a nuclear war are
  5. stranded on a Pacific island when their plane crashes.
  6. We first meet Ralph and Piggy who discover a conch-shell
  7. which they blow leading to the appearance of more boys.
  8. Last to arrive are Jack and his choir. The boys vote for Ralph
  9. to be their chief and he selects Jack and Simon to accompany
  10. him on a scouting trip.
  11.     
  12. The three boys soon discover that they are indeed on an island
  13. and that there is ample food and water available.
  14. In fact the whole thing seems like a thrilling adventure to
  15. them.

  17. CHAPTER TWO
  18. Ralph calls an assembly to tell all the boys what they have
  19. discovered. One small boy raises fears of a 'snake-thing' he
  20. claims to have seen.
  21.     
  22. Ralph suggests lighting a signal fire and the boys excitedly
  23. scramble up the mountain and use Piggy's glasses to make a
  24. fire.
  25.    
  26. In the rush the fire is allowed to spread and burns out of
  27. control. Piggy is scornful of their childish behaviour and
  28. points out that one small boy is missing presumably burnt to
  29. death.

  31. CHAPTER THREE
  32. Some time later Ralph and Jack argue about whether priority
  33. should be given to building huts or hunting pigs for meat.
  34.  
  35. Jack seems obsessed with hunting while Ralph is discovering
  36. the difficulties of being responsible for all the children.
  37.     
  38. As the two of them patch up their quarrel Simon steals off to
  39. a secret place he has found in the jungle pausing only to help
  40. the littluns pick fruit.
