- DOCUMENTATION FOR FAMILY SHEET I DB
-
- Welcome to Genealogy via computer! I have only been working
- with my KayPro for three months but I believe that it can be set
- up to do wonders with family history data.
-
- First some of my biases. I have only been "into" genealogy
- on an orderly studied basis for two years but I have found much
- data that is recorded and passed on is not documented. I find
- family tradition wonderful, rich and immensely interesting. I
- record it and pass it on to family BUT it is not family HISTORY.
- So the data system that I want to keep records on must allow me
- to record from whom I got information so that I can double check
- information when I find discrepancies. Therefore on all the forms
- I have craeated you will find fields to record sources and the
- footnote form at bottom of the page.
-
- Another area where I have had difficulty is in the recording
- of dates. Some people when they write 1/6/83 mean Jan 6, 1983
- and another recorder means the first of June, 1983. I have
- adopted what I believe is now standard genealogy practice of
- writing date as: day/mon/year or 6 Jun 1983. Whereever possible
- I have set up databases so data can only be entered this way. The
- only exception, I think, is for entering data as to the date you
- create record. When you come to this field the date will be
- entered for you by a ctrl-t command.
-
- The numbering system for your family records is very much a
- matter of personal preference. I have had difficulty in choosing
- a system but when I started working with PERFECT FILER I realized
- that a family number to list and access data was important and so
- I choose a system that adds a number for each generation and that
- number is the birth order of each person. I have also choosen to
- start all my numbers with the generation living at time of
- American Revolution so in my Slaughter family S1 is my ancestor
- John Slaughter that served in American Revolution. This comes
- down to my number which is S11223155, for I am 8th generation
- since 1776 and the fifth child of a fifth child and so on back to
- John Slaughter. But in my husbands family as they only came to
- the U.S. around 1880 and I do no have data back to 1776 so I have
- put in the eight generations but left zero for unknown data.
- Therefore his number is P00000182. I am sure there are flaws in
- this system and I may soon change. But for now I'm going to try
- this system.
- [March 15, 1983: first update! I now realize if I use my choosen
- numbering system it is only going to work if I place the latest
- generation number just after the letter. In my first printed update
- I'll bet I have lots more changes. Stay tuned! Pioneers have few
- road maps.]
-
- Before each child's name on this form you will find a status
- field with a heading of FS. If an X is placed in this box it
- indicates that I have an individual family sheet for this child
- also on the data base. The Database on PERFECT FILER are limited
- to 70 fields and 1024 characters so one data base cannot contain
- detailed infro on children. I have set up a data base for
- children and it is on disk C, but I have just about deceided for
- my use to put all data onto Family Sheet I, or Family Sheet I#
- (on the former you access by name and the latter by family#).
-
- I hope that everything else on form is self explanatory. If
- not please let me know.
-
- I have incuded several defined lists so that you can see how
- they work. I'm sure I'll be wanting other types of output, but
- these lists should give you some idea of the kinds of output that
- can be set up from the data on the data base.
-
- To access data records entered on this database use the
- following codes. WSLA and JPET, after the first J. Petersen
- records comes us then hit a ctrl-O to see the "other".
