Q R S T U V W X Probes have been used to collect data about a variety of geologic phenomena on celestial bodies from Gallery Y Z Satellites asteroid 46 Hestia, an object only 82 miles (132 km) in diameter in the asteroid belt, to volcanoes on lo (a moon of Jupiter); from the poles of the Sun to the 1,200 mph (1,931 km/h) winds on the planet Neptune. In the brief period of space exploration from October 4, 1957 (the first Sputnik) to January 25, 1994 (Clementine's mapp"g of the Moon) mankind has accomplished an extraordinary exploration of the Sun and all the planets and their moons, except Pluto. The primary goal of the unmanned probes launched during the period 1957-1959 was the Moon, with the Sputnik Sputnik, which means "space traveler" in Russian, was the first class of Soviet satellites. Sputnik 1, launched into Earth orbit on October 4, 1957, was the first artificial satellite. The success of Sputnik 1 panicked the U.S. into emphasizing science in its schools and entering a space race with the U.S.S.R. that did not end until the successful conclusion of the Apollo 11 mission.
