OCR: Arts & Letters SpaceAGE Clementine The Future of Space Exploration Artemis Lunar Mining During the Apollo missions to the Moon during the First Lunar Outpost 1970's and 1980's astronauts collected and returned to Earth over 840 pounds (381 kg) of Moon samples. Now, Lunar Mining after more than 20 years studying the samples scientists believe that the Moon may offer more than Gallery Intro meets the eye. They have found that the Moon holds vast deposits of Helium-3, a potentially cheap and clean source of future energy. In recent years nuclear energy in the form of fission has fallen victim to an erosion of public confidence thanks to the nuclear events at Chernobyl and Three Mile Island. Scientists have studied the thermonuclear reaction between deuterium and tritium. Unfortunately, around 80 percent of the energy that this reaction creates produces neutrons which in turn creates radioactivity. This radioactivity produces damage to the reactor and produces hazardous radioactive waste. Scientists now are researching a second generation fusion device - a reactor that can use a more attractive thermonuclear fuel and drastically reduce the problems associated with the common deuterium-tritium reaction. Helium-3 as a nuclear fuel source would Contents Appendix Index Back Print Print Setup Exit
