OCR: Arts & Letters SpaceAGE Clementine The Future of Space Exploration Artemis The Artemis Program The goal of the Artemis Program is to soft-land 4 types + First Lunar Outpost of payloads in the range of 441 pounds (200 kg) on the lunar surface with a common lander design. The name Lunar Mining comes from Artemis, the goddess of the golden rays in Greek mythology, a huntress and explorer whose Gallery Intro golden bow is the crescent moon, reflected in the Artemis Program logo. The program concept was developed in a July 1991 workshop at the Johnson Space Center in response to President Bush's call for a Space Exploration Initiative. At the workshop a strong consensus emerged that the concept had great potential and that a broad base of support exists for a "Common Lunar Lander" program. The four types of payloads identified were Lunar surface science, Lunar based astronomy, engineering test and demonstration, and site certification as human precursor missions. The lunar soil, or regolith, contains a 4 billion year record of the output of the Sun, and the surface craters record the cosmic bombardment history of the Earth-Moon system. The Moon is in effect a "Rosetta Stone" waiting to be read. Robotic exploration spacecraft are an important tool in opening the Moon Contents Appendix Index Back Print Print Setup Exit
