  1.                               WHAT IS microGourmet?

  4.         microGourmet is a shareware recipe database system which includes
  5.         100 gourmet recipes.  You can add all your own recipes.  You  can
  6.         also make a shopping list to task to the food store.  But best of
  7.         all, you will never lose a recipe again.
  8.  
  9.         microGourmet is a GREAT GIFT for a long-suffering spouse, or just
  10.         for that family member of friend who is a great cook.
  11.  
  12.         microGourmet  is not free.  If you use it for more than 15  days,
  13.         you must pay for it.  See the file REGISTER.ME for information.

  20.         December  31,  1990,  you will receive   the  next  version  of

  24.                         GETTING STARTED WITH microGourmet
  25.                                   Version 3.0x
  26.  
  27.         Before   you  do  anything  else,  make  a  backup  copy  of  the 
  28.         microGourmet  files.    Save the backup until  you  complete  the
  29.         installation and then destroy it.

  31.                                SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  32.  
  33.         microGourmet  requires PC-DOS or MS-DOS 2.0 (referred to as  DOS)
  34.         or  later.   If you are using a version of DOS earlier than  3.0,
  35.         you will need 256k of memory. If you are using DOS version 3.0 or
  36.         later,  you  will  need  320k of memory.   If you have  only  the
  37.         minimum amount of memory,  you may not be able to use some of the
  38.         features of the program,  like playing music while searching  for
  39.         recipes, or dropping into DOS without terminating microGourmet.

  41.         You  need  one of the following configurations  for  microGourmet
  42.         (with an optional hard disk):
  43.  
  44.           o one 1.2 Mb 5.25" disk drive,
  45.           o two 360 kb 5.25" disk drives,
  46.           o one 1.4 Mb 3.50" disk drive,
  47.           o one 720 kb 3.50" disk drive.

  49.         Any  monitor will work with microGourmet,  but we recommend color
  50.         for  best  effect.   A printer is optional,  and  any  80  column
  51.         printer  will do.   Make sure your system is set up to  recognize
  52.         your printer before you execute microGourmet.

  55.                              INSTALLING microGourmet

  61.         More  users have had trouble with this part of  the  installation
  62.         than  anything  else.   You MUST have a CONFIG.SYS  file  to  use
  63.         microGourmet.   This  file MUST include the following two lines:
  64.  
  65.              FILES=20
  66.              BUFFERS=20
  67.  
  68.         If you don't know what a CONFIG.SYS file is,  consult a friend or
  69.         your trusty DOS manual.  The CONFIG.SYS MUST be located either on
  70.         the  root directory of the floppy disk you formatted with the  /S
  71.         option,  or in the root directory of your hard disk.

  73.         FOR 1.2 MB 5.25", AND 1.4 MB AND 720 KB 3.50" DISK DRIVES

  76.         There  isn't  much  to  do. You don't have  to  use  the  install
  77.         program).   If you  plan to run microGourmet from a floppy  disk,
  78.         format  a disk with the /S option (for system files),  make  sure
  79.         your  computer  will  boot  with this disk,  and  then  copy  the
  80.         microGourmet files to it.  You're done!

  82.         If  you  want  to  run microGourmet from  a  hard  disk,  make  a
  83.         directory  on your hard disk, (we recommend calling  it  GOURMET,
  84.         and copy all the files to it.  Once again, you're done!

  88.         FOR 360 KB 5.25" DISK DRIVES
  89.  
  90.         All microGourmet files are included in this .ZIP file (believe it
  91.         or not, the program still takes two 360 kb disks when installed). 
  92.         The main files you  need  for microGourmet are packed together in
  93.         a  file   called  MG310.ZIP.   Use the PKUNZIP  program  or  your
  94.         equivalent  to unpack all the files.  Put the files on the  disks
  95.         as described below.

  97.         On  the  first disk, formatted with the /S option,  (for  booting
  98.         your system from drive A:) put the following files:

  108.         On the second disk, for use in drive B:, put the following files:

  119.                              EXECUTING microGourmet

  121.         Now  that  your  ready to use microGourmet,   first  reboot  your
  122.         system so that the new CONFIG.SYS parameters can go into  effect. 
  123.         Then  place your floppy disks in drives A: and B:, or  change  to
  124.         your  microGourmet sub-directory on  the  hard disk.   Then  type
  125.         the  command  GOURMET (upper case is not necessary).   The  first
  126.         time    you   use  microGourmet,   it   will  ask   you   several
  127.         configuration  questions, and store your answers in a file called
  128.         OPTION.MEM.

  130.         You  should  be prepared to answer the questions before  starting
  131.         microGourmet. The questions are the following:
  132.  
  133.         o Are you using a color or monochrome monitor?
  134.         o Do you want to play music while searching for recipes?
  135.         o Do you use single sheets or continuous forms in your printer?
  136.         o How many disk drive does your system include?
  137.         o Which  drive  do you want microGourmet to start  searching  for
  138.           the files it needs?
  139.  
  140.         Some  users  are confused by the last two questions  above.   The
  141.         purpose of these questions is for the microGourmet  configuration
  142.         procedure  to  know  where to start looking for  the  files  that
  143.         should be on your disk(s) somewhere.  You may view this procedure
  144.         as  an  integrity  check.  microGourmet  verifies  that  all  the
  145.         appropriate  files  are available, and microGourmet  knows  where
  146.         they are.

  152.         If you move your microGourmet files to another disk or  directory,
  153.         first delete the file OPTION.MEM.

  156.         The following examples should clarify the questions.

  159.         If you are using microGourmet on a two floppy drive system, it is
  160.         sufficient to answer the questions like this:

  162.         o How many disk drive does your system include? 2
  163.         o Which  drive  do you want microGourmet to start  searching  for
  164.           the files it needs? A

  167.         If  you are using microGourmet on your hard disk and you  have  a
  168.         system  with one floppy disk drive, (note that DOS  still  allows
  169.         you  to  call that one drive A: or B:) and a hard disk  which  is
  170.         drive C:, answer the questions like this:

  172.         o How many disk drive does your system include? 3
  173.         o Which  drive  do you want microGourmet to start  searching  for
  174.           the files it needs? C

  177.         Don't  make the following mistake.  Using microGourmet on a  hard
  178.         disk, DO NOT answer the questions like this:
  179.  
  180.         o How many disk drive does your system include? 3
  181.         o Which  drive  do you want microGourmet to start  searching  for
  182.           the files it needs? A
  183.  
  184.         In this situation, you will probably not have a disk in drive  A,
  185.         but  microGourmet will start searching for the files it needs  on
  186.         drive A.  Instant problem!

  189.         After  you answer these questions,  microGourmet will create  the
  190.         configuration file,  and display its banner.   You're now up  and
  191.         running!
  192.  
  193.                                PRINTING THE MANUAL
  194.  
  195.         The  first  time you use microGourmet,  you should use main  menu
  196.         option  6  (perform  utility functions) to see a  menu  of  these
  197.         utilities.    Option  6  on  the  utilities  menu  is  to   print
  198.         microGourmet menus and help text.   You should use this option to
  199.         print  a manual,  unless you want to use only the on-line context
  200.         sensitive help.

  202.                                     PROBLEMS
  203.  
  204.         If  you have any problems setting up or  operating  microGourmet,
  205.         try asking a knowledgeable friend to help.  If that doesn't work,
  206.         please  send us a letter describing the problem in as much detail
  207.         as  possible.  Include screen printouts or anything else you  may
  208.         think  useful.   The  more you tell us about  your  problem,  the
  209.         easier  it  will be for us to fix it.  If you  notice  a  strange
  210.         looking  line  of  text at the top of the  screen  at  any  time, 
  211.         please write down EXACTLY what it says and send that to us.

  213.         A user comment form is provided at the end of the printed  manual
  214.         for  your convenience.   Please copy that form,  fill it out  and
  215.         send it to us if any problems arise.
