Monochrome users please refer to the file SN1987BW. The bottom part of the original image showing only more background has been clipped. The ring around SN 1987A as detected in August 1990 from the Hubble Space CR Telescope. The ring is thought to consist of material ejected from the precessor of SN 1987A as a strong stellar wind, now ligthed by the 'flash' of the Supernova. The extended light-blue areas around the ring and the stars are a relict of image reduction and calibration.
