The space shuttle Columbia (STS-1) was the first reusable spacecraft. It took off like a rocket and landed like a plane. There was pressure from the White House and Congress to create a vehicle that was economical to both develop and maintain. The shuttle has since been used for a range of activities, such as satellite delivery and retrieval and laboratory research in space.
