Transcription: The gas began escaping early Monday morning from an underground storage tank at the Union Carbide Pesticide Factory on the outskirts of Bhopal. The gas, identified as methyl isocyanate, acts in a similar way to tear gas, but is many times more powerful. Thousands fled the area. Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and disorder as people, some already affected, tried to leave the city by any means possible.
