On March 13-14, a storm called the 20th century's most powerful hit the East Coast. The storm dumped snow on states from Maine to Georgia and sent tornadoes spinning across Florida.
Power was cut off to three million homes, thousands were forced to evacuate because of flooding, and hurricane-force winds spawned 20 tornadoes over Florida. Blizzard conditions existed as far south as southern Georgia.
There were 213 storm-related fatalities and $800 million in damage.
