On Aug. 2, Jan and Robert DeBoer returned two-year-old baby Jessica to her biological parents. The two had attempted to adopt Jessica with the consent of the child's mother. However, Cara Schmidt changed her mind and married the baby's father, Daniel. The Schmidts argued that the adoption by the DeBoers was not final, and the courts agreed.
