  3. RIVERSIDE, Calif. --  Followers of Khallid Abdul Muhammad, the controversial Nation of Islam minister, maintained a stony-faced vigil outside his hospital room Monday as police sought a motive for his shooting.

  5.         Muhammad, 43, suspended by Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan after a November 1993 speech in which he called Jews "bloodsuckers," was in stable condition.

  7.         Also hospitalized at an undisclosed location was the shooting suspect, James Edward Bess, 49, of Tacoma, Wash., who was beaten and kicked by the crowd after the shooting.

  9.         Bess is a former Nation of Islam minister ejected by the leadership three years ago.

  11.         Police say he opened fire as Muhammad walked outside a University of California auditorium where he had addressed 500 students.

  13.         Muhammad's lower left leg was pierced by a bullet and his right leg was grazed; five other people also were injured.

  15.         Police say Muhammad may have left the tight security in the auditorium after being handed a phony note on stage indicating his time was up.

  17.         Bess preaches on public-access TV in Seattle and uses the name Brother James X.

  19.         One Muslim listener, Syid Suni Askia, says Bess promoted "a distorted concept of . . . what Farrakhan says. He had his own, self-styled ministry."
