The Hebron mosque killings are the latest in a bloody toll of Arab-Israeli violence since Israel was established May 14, 1948: April 9, 1948: Radical underground Jewish fighters massacre more than 200 Arab men, women and children in village of Deir Yassin, sparking exodus of Palestinians. Oct. 29, 1956: Israeli troops kill 43 Arab civilians near the Israeli town of Kafr Kasem for breaking a curfew.
Feb. 13, 1970: A bomb destroys a Swiss airplane bound from Zurich to Tel Aviv, of 47 killed 17 were Israelis. May 30, 1972: Terrorists working for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine fire on tourists at Lod airport near Tel Aviv killing 25 and wounding 60. Sept. 6, 1972: PLO terrorists kill 11 members of Israel's Olympic team during the Munich games. April 11, 1974: Palestinian gunmen infiltrate Israeli town of Kiryat Shmona and kill 18 civilians. What's at stake: The PLO-Israel peace accord signed Sept. 13, 1993. President Clinton has summoned the two sides to Washington for open-ended talks. PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat and Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin have placed themselves at risk by backing the September accord. Whether the next deadline for implementing the September agreement, in mid-April, can still be met. As of today, the fragile PLO-Israeli peace accord was getting back on track as both sides had agreed on how to handle the West Bank area of Jericho, to come under Palestinian jurisdiction along with the Gaza Strip. Border controls and Israeli withdrawal are also at issue.
