LOS ANGELES -- O.J. Simpson was nowhere near his ex-wife's condo at the time of her murder, says Simpson's new lawyer, hired after his first one quit Wednesday.
"O.J. was at home waiting to get into a limousine to take him to the airport on a trip that had been planned well in advance," says Robert Shapiro.
He took over after Howard Weitzman resigned, citing professional obligations and his friendship with Simpson.
Nicole Brown Simpson, 35, and Ronald Goldman, 25, were stabbed to death Sunday night outside her Brentwood condo.
Police reportedly have focused on Simpson as a suspect.
Shapiro, also a high-profile lawyer, says Simpson is "extremely depressed" and under a doctor's care.
Simpson eluded the media Wednesday afternoon to attend private services for his ex-wife.
Police will not discuss the investigation or any suspects. No arrests have been made.
But when asked if reports about evidence - a blood-soaked glove and blood in a vehicle - found in or near Simpson's home have been wrong, L.A. Police Lt. John Dunkin shook his head no. Also:
-- Police confirmed they had been called to Nicole Simpson's townhouse several times since their divorce for disputes between she and Simpson.
-- A 1989 police report detailed injuries Simpson allegedly inflicted on his wife. Her face was described as "badly beaten with a cut lip, swollen and blacken (sic) left eye and cheek . . . a hand imprint on her left neck."
-- Fred Goldman said his son and Nicole Simpson were not romantically involved.
