  1.   If indoors, stay there. Duck under a strong table or desk or stand in a corner where structural support is stronger. Don't use elevators.

  3.         If outdoors, get in an open area away from buildings, trees and utility lines.
  4.  
  5.         If driving, pull aside and stop. Try to avoid overpasses and utility lines, and stay inside until the shaking is over.

  7.         What to do after a quake
  8.  
  9.         Hunt for hazards. Check for gas and water leaks, broken wires. If there is damage, turn utility off at source.
  10.  
  11.         Check building for cracks and damage, including roof, chimney and foundation.
  12.  
  13.         If you evacuate, leave a note inside your home telling family members where you can be found.
  14.  
  15.         Plan ahead for the next quake
  16.  
  17. Store emergency supplies, including fire extinguisher, battery-operated radio, first-aid kit, food and water.
  18.  
  19.         Determine the safest spots in each room. Conduct drills.
  20.  
  21.         Learn how to turn off your water, electricity and gas.
  22.  
  23.         Decide how to reunite family if separated. Choose an out-of-state relative or friend to take messages.
  24.  
  25.         Secure tall bookcases and furniture to the wall.
  26.  
  27. Make sure no heavy pictures or objects can fall on your bed while you're sleeping.

  29.         Fasten hot water heaters, other appliances to wall.
