  5. Welcome to HT - An Amiga Hypertext program
  6. This is a quick demo, but should give you a good feel
  7. for what is possible with HT.\bold
  8.

  10.     To quickly let you know, links are shown in inverse video and can be
  11. followed by double clicking the mouse on them.    Scrolling is done with the
  12. keyboard arrow keys, the scrollbar, or arrow gadgets (or even the numeric
  13. keypad if you feel so inclined!).

  15.     Recently, the word \bold "Hypertext" \bold has been \ital widely \ital
  16. used (and abused) in the computer press and even mainstream journals. If
  17. you are not familiar, you may wonder what really \ital is \ital Hypertext?
  18. The concept of Hypertext was born in the 1950's, and quite simply,
  19. Hypertext is a way of presenting textual information with the added
  20. benefits a computer can provide; with the \bold Amiga, \bold these benefits
  21. aren't just limited to instant cross-referencing, but also include
  22. pictures, animations, music, and several other types of computer "media".
  23. \bold HT \bold is my idea of what Hypertext should be like for the Amiga.
  24. Although it is certainly not ideal, HT provides a very rich set of features
  25. for both Hypertext authors and Hypertext readers.

  28.     Unfortunately to fully demonstrate all of the features of HT would
  29. require much more disk space than is possible.    I've tried to highlight the
  30. more important features, and provide good documentation so that it is easy
  31. to utilize the additional features when you need them.

  34.     In \ITALIC HT \ITALIC you can text link to all sorts of things.  For
  35. example \BOLD sound\BOLD  is a useful way to communicate. \ITALIC HT
  36. \ITALIC will let you link text to \Sound { -p400 sounds/StarTrek.SND }
  37. digitized sound.\endlink   Using sound in this way is a simple method to
  38. improve the impact of your hypertext documents.

  40.     Since everyone likes Amiga \BOLD Graphics, \BOLD we can't leave them
  41. out.  To demonstrate, here is a link from the word "gorilla" to a famous
  42. Amiga picture of a gorilla.  The \Show    { pics/Gorilla } gorilla \endlink
  43. is an intriguing beast.

  45.     \BOLD ARexx\BOLD  is the scripting language of choice on the \ITALIC
  46. Amiga \ITALIC (and rightly so).  To further that popularity, \ITALIC HT
  47. \ITALIC supports \BOLD ARexx \BOLD quite nicely.  For example, a simple
  48. double click on an ARexx link could launch an ARexx macro directly from
  49. within the document you are reading.  That same macro could then
  50. communicate back with HT to have other documents loaded as needed.  Those
  51. of you with ARexx will find several ARexx macros in the Rexx drawer on the
  52. disk.  You can explore there to find out more.

  54.     Of course, there is also the \BOLD "hypertext" \BOLD part of HT!  Links
  55. can be to other text in other files.  For example, to get started on the
  56. real documentation to HT, you can \Link { Documentation/ht.doc } just click
  57. here.\endlink    HT doesn't hold a proprietary format on your documents
  58. either, HT uses plain ASCII text files which everyone can produce easily.

  60.     HT also allows links to arbitrary external programs.  For example, if I
  61. wanted to let you run a text editor, I could do the following:     \Run {

  65.     HT doesn't forget \BOLD music\BOLD  either.  The \ITALIC Amiga \ITALIC is
  66. capable of producing some very nice music, sooooooooo \ITALIC HT \ITALIC
  67. lets you use it.  Unfortunately, there is no room on the disk for a good
  68. piece of Amiga music, but the capability is here.

  70.     Amiga \BOLD Animations\BOLD  aren't forgotten, but again, lack of disk
  71. space doesn't allow me to include an animation on disk which I could link
  72. to.  HT is certainly capable however, and a double click of the mouse is
  73. all that would be needed to bring up any animation.

  79.     That concludes this \ital demo.\ital   The \Link { Documentation/HT.doc
  80. } documentation \endlink on disk is the main example of what some of the
  81. possibilities with HT are.  Work is progressing on an seperate \ital
  82. Examples Disk, \ital but that is not currently ready.  HT provides a lot of
  83. functionality which, when used right, can be an impressive tool. Hopefully
  84. you will be able to appreciate some of that power when going through the
  85. hypertext documents on this disk.
