TEAM HELP FILE -- Silicon Secretary V1.3 December 15, 1990
For a description of the menu options click on the SCREEN and press
the HELP key or choose HELP from the menu.
This window looks more complicated than it is. The main purpose is
to enter the individual's scores and the team's wins/loses. Most of the
gadgets are there to help you move around the various teams and weeks.
At the upper left hand portion of the window you'll see a disk gadget.
Selecting this (dark) will cause your current data file to be saved every
50 entries. Selecting this gadget will also cause the one on the Team
Editor window to be selected - they do the same thing. The status of
everything in this window is saved with the data file.
*** STARTING FROM SCRATCH - BASIC RULES
* Team #0, The SUB TEAM, is ALWAYS present and it is the place where
you stick floating subs (substitutes that bowl for various teams).
* All teams have at least one member, including the sub team.
* Any bowler's name that starts with a '#' as the first character
or is named will not print. There are a few options that will
ask you if you want to print hidden bowlers.
* Any bowler's name that starts with a '##' will never print.
* You're limited to 100 teams and 50 bowlers on any team.
...sorry #51, we don't have room for you :-)
* There can be a different number of bowlers on each team as long
as each team has a minimum roister.
Now that you know some of the rules let's set up a league...
*** SETTING UP A LEAGUE
1. If you havn't already done so, open the LEAGUE INFO window
and fill in the blanks about your league.
2. Press the ADD TEAM gadget to create a new team.
3. Press the ADD BOWLER gadget to create as many slots as there
are bowlers on that team. Remember that one bowler is automatically
created when a team is created.
4. Insert the TEAM NAME to the right of the team number.
5. Enter the LH (Last Half) WON and LOST if starting in the middle
of a two part season, otherwise leave them blank.
6. Insert the BOWLER'S NAMES and OLD AVERAGE from the previous
league, if any, for each bowler. If you're starting in the middle
of a two part season enter the LAST HALF PINS & GAMES also,
otherwise leave them blank.
7. Select either 'M' (male) or 'F' (female) from the gadget to the
right of the bowler's name. The program keeps track of how many
men and women are in your league. Whichever is greater is the
default. Example- 15 Men and 18 Women on your league. The next
bowler created will be a woman.
After the second week you will be asked to verify any sex changes.
This should help prevent clicking by accident.
8. Save your set-up now.
*** SELECTING A TEAM
On the left side you will see a proportional gadget. This allows you
to quickly move between teams. The arrows above and below it move one
team at a time backwards and forwards.
*** SELECTING A BOWLER
To the right of proportional gadget are two large arrows. They allow
you to move to the different bowlers in a team. Only the center bowler
is editable. When you are entering data and press RETURN (or ENTER) on
the last game for any bowler the next bowler (or team) will
automatically be displayed.
*** SELECTING A WEEK
At the top (about centered) you'll see two more arrows with a week
number displayed between them. They allow you to move through the
various weeks in your season. You can not display weeks greater than
the number that are in your season. If you click on the gadget
displaying the week number it will toggle you between the first week
and next available week in your season.
*** ENTERING A SCORE
Once the team, bowler and week are selected just enter a score for
the appropriate game and RETURN or ENTER to move to the next game.
*** ABSENT/BLIND
(see INDIVIDUAL FORFEITURES also)
The easy way to do this is click the ABSENT gadget. All of the current
bowler's scores that don't have any value will turn into 'A's. An
ABSENT bowler will will give their team their AVERAGE-10 and their
current handicap. If a bowler is ABSENT and no one is subbing for them
enter 'A'bsent.
If you are so bold as to click the ABSENT gadget again the 'A's will
turn into 'B's. This is a forced BLIND and it's use is limited.
EXAMPLE- Assume that you started a team with a blind bowler until a
team member could be found. After four weeks Joe Bowler fills
the slot. If Joe had a entering average from a previous league
that average(-10) would be plugged in automatically for the
first four weeks when actually it should be the BLIND score.
And thus the 'B' was created to force a BLIND.
Both the 'A' and 'B' may be entered from the keyboard.
*** INDIVIDUAL FORFEITURES
This is for when an individual's scores should NOT be counted
towards the team's totals. To turn it on enter the bowler's scores
and then click the ABSENT gadget. A thin border around the scores
will turn white. Clicking ABSENT again or manually pressing return
will turn it off (dark border). Here's two examples where it is
necessary:
*** EXAMPLE 1
A floating substitute bowled for team #2 weeks 1-3. On the fourth
week he becomes a member of team #8. When you click SUB TO BOWLER
a copy will remain in the sun team for team #2s use (remember weeks
1-3?) and the bowler will be added to team #8 with weeks 1-3 marked
automatically as INDIVIDUAL FORFEITURES. This way the bowler keeps
his average and individual stats but the team gets credit for a BLIND.
*** EXAMPLE 2
If your league allows team subs (more bowlers on a team that can
actually bowl any night) this would allow ALL members to bowl with
the team only getting credit for the proper number.
NOTE: True floating subs (on the SUB TEAM) may bowl as often as they
like without needing INDIVIDUAL FORFEITURE, since the sub team
isn't a real team anyway.
*** SUBSTITUTING
There are two types of subs: floating subs and team subs. Floating
subs belong to no team and are free to bowl for any team that needs
their services. Floating subs are entered in team #0 (the SUBTEAM).
A team sub (for this program) would be the sixth man on a five man team
and they are part of the team.
FLOATING SUBS
At the lower right there is a gadget called USE SUB. Use the arrows
next to it to find your sub and then click USE SUB to enter the sub.
As you move through the subs their scores for the current week will be
displayed to the left of their name. If the sub is #4 on the Subteam a
'S4' will show up for the bowler's score.
Subs only have to bowl the games that they will be used. It's possible
(and legal) for a floating sub to bowl three games, each for a different
team. Only the empty score will be filled in when USE SUB is selected.
NOTE: The sub's scores MUST be entered before they can be selected.
TEAM SUBS
On a five man/woman team that has six+ bowlers leave the scores for
bowlers that didn't bowl blank (NOT ABSENT!). As long as the proper
number of bowlers bowl the program doesn't care which ones they are.
*** ENTERING TEAM WINS
If NO string gadget is active you may select the team's wins/loses/
ties/forfeits by using the function keys. F1 = GAME 1, F2 = GAME 2,
F3 = GAME 3, F4 = GAME 4 (if active), and F5 = TOTAL PINS. You must
have a value for each of these gadgets or the program will yell at you.
When you're done press F10 to move to the first bowler in the next team
or use the gadgets.
If you ever change a value on a week that has not been bowled yet
use the menu option CLEAR WINS to reset it.
*** DELETE TEAM
If you click this gadget you will be asked if you really want the
CURRENT TEAM to be deleted. If you answer YES you can kiss that team
and all of the bowlers on it goodbye. If you save the data after you
delete a team there is no way to get it back.
*** DELETE BOWLER
If you click this gadget you will be asked if you really want the
CURRENT BOWLER to be deleted. If you answer YES,that bowler is history.
If you save the data after you delete a team there is no way to get it
back.
*** CHANGE BOWLER'S POSITION
Moves the current bowler back one position (Bowler #2 would become
bowler #3 and bowler #3 would move up to bowler #2). If the bowler
is the last bowler they will be moved forward one position.
You will be asked if you really want to do this.
If the bowler is a floating sub there will be a slight delay while
the Silicon Secretary readjusts all of the bowlers that are using
the transposed subs.
*** MOVE BOWLER TO SUB
Moves the current bowler to the end of the SUBTEAM. A #SCORE HOLDER#
bowler is created to replace the missing team member, otherwise the
team's scores would be messed up. The #SCORE HOLDER# bowler will not
print and should not be deleted.
This is useful if a bowler cannot continue on a regular basis with
the league but would like to sub when available. The bowler will be
added to the end of sub team.
You will be asked if you really want to do this.
*** MOVE SUB TO BOWLER
Moves the currently displayed sub after the current bowler. Any weeks
prior to the current week with a score will be marked as an INDIVIDUAL
FORFEITURE.
If the sub was not used by any bowler the sub will be removed from
the Sub Team. There may be a slight delay to adjust for the sub
renumbering.
If the sub is being used a #SCORE HOLDER# bowler will be created on
the SUBTEAM to prevent any team that may be using the sub's past scores.
*** LEAGUE SCHEDULE
Creates a rotation of all teams using the lane data entered in the
LEAGUE INFO window. This will be saved as a text file and NOT as part
of the data file (with a one line exception for the next week).
The number to the left represents the schedule being used
(eg-'10' is for a 10 team schedule) The schedules are the same ones
that ABC/WIBC hands out.
At the end of each the half a 'unscheduled' week will exist to allow
for whatever method your league uses to determine the final positions.
Usually this is done by placing the first and second place teams against
each other (third and fourth, etc.) Since some leagues have other ways
of figuring positions I chose to leave blanks.
If you have too few or too many teams this menu item will be disabled.
*** SEARCHING FOR A BOWLER
You may search for a bowler's name by entering a question mark
followed by a unique portion of the name in the gadget where you
would normally enter the bowler's name (either in the team editor
personnel window). If a match is found it will be displayed, otherwise
the original bowler's name will reappear. Regardless of where you
start the search the computer begins with the first bowler in the
Sub Team. The search string is NOT case sensitive and may be any part
of the bowler's name.
