This image is rendered in Turbo Silver 3.0 SV ray-tracing mode.
The background is an image digitised from a piece of mildewed paper,
mapped to a stencil. The stencil is a 1-bitplane image created from the
same picture. I converted all but the darkest colors in the image to color
#1, which is treated by Silver as opaque during rendering. The darkest
shades were converted to color #0, which is rendered as transparent (in
this case allowing the turquoise sky to show through the background). The
paper image was mapped to the stencil in exact registration so that holes
in the image would line up with the holes in the stencil. The fish was
created in the same way, using an old tin can label as the source image.
The sphere in the upper right corner is mapped with a digitised pattern
from an old piece of marbelised paper.
The striped pole uses Silver's built-in "layers" texture.
The feather, pencil and pebble geometries were created in Sculpt 3D and
converted to Silver format using InterChange from Syndesis.
There are two brush-wrapped flat surfaces in the scene. One is a
ray-traced image I created last year called "Splash", which is an attempt
to re-create a famous stroboscopic image originally photographed by Harold
Edgerton. The other is the sailor who is the trademark for Player's
cigarettes. You might be able to make out the words "Player's, Please" in
the lower right corner of this small image.
The shell geometry was created with a script in PAGErender 3D, and
brought into Sculpt 3D for a little bit of adjustment before converting to
Silver format. The pattern on the shell is a digitised Nautilus shell
which is mapped onto the object with Silver's brush-wrapping feature.
The 24-bit RGB file produced by Silver was loaded into ASDG's The Art
Department in order to produce the final interlaced HAM image.
