Validate is a program I whipped up for individuals who ask how to force a
disk to be validated. It is CLI only. The basic usage is
VALIDATE DISK-NAME P
The DISK-NAME argument is the name of the disk to be validated. The P is
optional and if present will cause the program to pause for ten seconds
between clearing the bitmap and uninhibiting the drive. I usually do this
to disks I'm going to mail; it forces the receiver to check the structure
of the disk and the checksums on the control blocks upon receiving the
disks. Note that the name of the disk is required, not the device.
(I.e., "Empty", not "DF0:") This is to make sure it found the right
root block.
THE AUTHOR SPECIFICALLY DISCLAIMS ALL WARRANTIES, EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED,
INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO, IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND
FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. IN NO EVENT SHALL THE AUTHOR BE LIABLE
FOR ANY DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE USE OF THIS PROGRAM. Most of the information
used to find the root block has been determined by inspection of disks.
Your mileage and controller may vary. The root block is checked for
validity before any modifications are made, but I suggest you back up your
hard disk before running this against it the first time.
If enough requests are made, I will add the code to zero unused blocks.
This is handy to do occasionally as it makes life easier for DiskSalv,
DiskDoctor, and so on.
The source for this will probably never be available as most of it is
coming from a commercial program soon to be released.
