  30. seriously. Consequently, be aware that I make no claims about the
  31. validity of the theories, equations and general guesswork used by the
  32. AMIGAPUNT program to rate race-horses.

  50. Minimal! If you want online help then you should copy the APUNT.HELP
  51. file into your 'T:' directory which is where AMIGAPUNT will look for
  52. it. If it can't find it then you're given the option to select the
  53. APUNT.HELP file via a file requester.

  55. Alternatively you may care to dump APUNT.HELP to your printer.

  57. I have provided two batch files to install and/ or print 'APUNT.HELP'.
  58. Note that you will need 'ICONX'(WB 1.3)  in your C: directory for the
  59. batch files to work properly.

  62. I also suggest you create a directory to which you can save rated races
  63. for future reference.

  69.             THEORY & GUESSWORK.
  70.  
  71. The idea for 'AMIGAPUNT' came from an article published in a popular
  72. punting magazine some years ago. The notion is that the factors
  73. affecting a horse's performance and, ultimately, the result of the
  74. race, can be given a value. The article argued that four factors were
  75. at work:
  76.  
  77.     FACTOR                      VALUE
  78.     -----------------------------------------------------

  80.     FITNESS.    
  81.     The general condition of the horse.         30%
  82.  
  83.     CONSISTENCY
  84.     The 'strike rate' of wins of the
  85.     horse.                              30%

  87.     WEIGHT
  88.     If the horse carries less than the others
  89.     than that's a bonus                     20%
  90.  
  91.     QUALITY
  92.     Breeding and the types of races won
  93.     will determine the quality                  10%
  94.

  101. AMIGAPUNT takes these ideas considerably further. ELEVEN factors are
  102. identified and are given a default value. The user may change these to
  103. suit his evaluations.

  107.             USING AMIGAPUNT
  108.  
  109. Ideally you should use a good form guide such as the 'SPORTSMAN'.
  110. Failing that any form giving you last starts details will do. THE
  111. AUSTRALIAN & the SYDNEY MORNING HERALD'S GOLDEN GUIDE will do nicely.

  113. Evaluating race horses is a subjective business so I am not going to
  114. bore you with my pet theories. However, rating systems such as
  115. 'AMIGAPUNT' will (probably, as likely as not, perhaps) show best
  116. results if you follow a few rules:
  117.  
  118.     1)  SELECT QUALITY RACES WHICH HAVE BIG PRIZE MONEY.
  119.  
  120.     2)  AVOID RACES WHERE MORE THAN 30% OF THE STARTERS
  121.         HAVE NO RECENT FORM.
  122.  
  123.     3)  SELECT RACES WITH SMALL FIELDS. AVOID RACES WITH
  124.         MORE THAN 14 OR 15 STARTERS.

  126.     4)  BE CONSISTENT IN YOUR APPROACH.
