-----WBRes----
17-Sep-89
This package contains the dream of many a Workbench user - resident commands
with aliases available, from Workbench!
In case the wonders of this program escape you then consider the following
problems :
1) you have a disk based magazine, but for every article you wish to
read, it has to go away and reload the text display program off the floppy;
solution - make the text display program resident (perhaps in the magazines
startup code). The program is then available instantaneously without
reloading from disk each time required.
2) you copy a bunch of pictures onto your hard disk, now instead of changing
all their default tools to point to your IFF display program, just make
your display program resident. Workbench will now find your resident
display program first, disregarding whatever the default tool pathname is set
to (ie it will ignore the drive and directory parts of the tool name).
3) you get a disk full of text files or pictures, but they're all set up to
use crazy-joes text/IFF display program - again the solution is make your
text, IFF display etc programs resident, then use the alias feature to
direct Workbench's requests for crazy-joes program to use your resident one.
Those are the most common applications for resident programs from Workbench,
that I have a need for, but there are few reasons to stop any other program
from being made resident.
Well, there is one **small** problem (:-) the program you make resident must
be non self-modifying, re-enterant code (same as CLI residency requirements)
and of course few Workbench tools are, unless they were also designed to
work from CLI. I suspect TxED might be, don't know aboyt other commercial
programs. Included in this package are two utilities, Ty (to display text
files), and Display (to display IFF pictures). Display is one of the
ILBM programs off the IFF disk from CBM, but recompiled under Lattice C V5,
with the resident startup stuff, unfortunately there are problems making the
colour cycling task resident,so I think its disabled in this version.
You can disable the CRC check, which will allow you to try and use non
re-enterant stuff, but the results (any Gurus etc) are your problem!
Finally, John has released this as shareware for two reasons :
1) He & I think it is a potentially very useful program, and should really
improve the functionality of Workbench. (Well I like it!!!!!!)
2) He needs some money! - we are talking repossessed computers here!!
(anyone got a vacancy for a good C programmer, with Amiga experience even?)
Anyone putting out a commercial magazine on a disk etc, who thinks this
would we a great improvement to their disk, is welcome to negotiate the
payment of royalties for its use, otherwise use in commercial products
is not allowed. See documentation file for copyright notice, and
distribution info etc.

NB In case it's not obvious - don't exit from WBRes once you've used it to
load things, just iconify it (the ICON gadget), it unloads every thing if
you exit.
