GUIDE TO THE TURBO SILVER BRICKS TEXTURE
by Brad Schenck June 1989
Probably requires 1 megabyte (are you doing ray tracing
with less?); presentation requires the Projector,
the public domain interpreter for
Director animations.
======================================================================
This is a visual guide to how the parameters for Turbo
Silver's Bricks texture work. The new documentation released with
Turbo Silver SV is much improved for all the textures (including se-
veral new ones) but it's still difficult to visualise the way the
parameters may interact, and sometimes it's hard to figure out how
to make use of them without a lot of the dreaded Trial And Error.
I'd been trying to make the time to do a set of experiments
using the brick texture parameters (with Turbo Silver v.3.0) but
before I knew it, Turbo Silver SV was released and suddenly there
were a bunch of new textures to play with too. What I've done to
make life easier for myself is to make this presentation, which
graphically illustrates how each parameter affects the texture. On
the principle that this will make life easier for you too, I'm re-
leasing this freely distributable presentation.
Each parameter, and some combinations of one or more para-
meters, is illustrated by a solid modelled cube so that you can see
how the texture is affected on all three axes. It's important to
remember that the parameters refer to the X, Y and Z axes of the
OBJECT, not the world; in my samples the object X, Y and Z are in
fact oriented to the world axes, but if you rotate an object that
will not be the case.
These weren't intended to be breathtaking pictures, by the
way: in fact they're as crude and simple as I could make them,
since really they are there to convey information as simply as pos-
sible.
The way I've set up the presentation it would be a simple
matter to plug in examples and text for the other textures (much
simpler than making the meaningful examples for them!) and I may
be able to do that if enough of you feel that this would be help-
ful to you.
