  9.     "Charon" is my entry for the 1988 BADGE Killer Demo
  10. Contest. To run it from the Workbench, just double-click its
  11. icon.  From the CLI, just type "Charon".  Do NOT type "pro-
  12. jector Charon.film", as you normally would for a Director
  13. presentation.

  15.     This story is a good example of one of the great
  16. strengths of fantasy literature: it makes us look at an
  17. everyday idea from such an unusual vantage that we are
  18. forced to see it afresh; the idea here is one that many of
  19. us have grown up with and learned to ignore, but one that
  20. I think we need to remember.

  22.     The music file is a traditional Scottish tune called
  23. "The Arran Boat".

  27.     I wrote this demo on an Amiga 500 with one megabyte of
  28. RAM, then tested it on a 1000 and on a 2000, from floppy disks
  29. and a Seagate hard disk. After loading the demo will inquire 
  30. whether it's running from a hard disk or from floppy. This is
  31. to adjust the timing of the piece to compensate for the faster
  32. loading time from hard disks.
  33.     There are many variables in system speeds, and in the
  34. speed of hard disks. I've tried to ensure that "Charon" will 
  35. run pretty much the same way on ANY system, but there will be
  36. some variation. This usually shows up in the synchronisation
  37. of the graphics and music, which are running as separate tasks.
  38.     The fewer background tasks you're running, the better
  39. the synchronisation should be. I've found a big difference on
  40. my system while having GOMF in the background - for reference,
  41. I have a 2 floppy system with usually either my hard drive or
  42. VD0: mounted, and a couple of utilities like Conman and Popcli.
  43.     The demo will run from RAM: but are you really going to 
  44. copy this entire disk there?  Well, then tell it (when it asks)
  45. that it's running from a hard drive and it will roughly act 
  46. like itself. I don't really recommend that.
