WE ARE ... The AMiga Users of Calgary, the Amiga support group
in Calgary. The 2400x200 pixel 32 colour IFF picture contains
the likenesses of some great people, and some famed Amiga GURUs.
The Truth Behind the Picture
It was conceived in the mind of Stephen Vermeulen, who while hacking
on a superbitmap window one day said "Wouldn't it be nice if this
scrolling was faster and smoother?". To which Gonzo Gunn (Ian) said
"Yes, the flickering scroll sucks!". So... after many hours, and
much meditation in the key of C, the program "Display" (now dubbed
ScrollBoard Express) was born.
One day a second Steve entered the story, Iconosist Extrordinaire
Stephen Jeans, when the first Steve realizing that the scrolling
program could make shockwaves at the local (Mac + PC dominated)
computer show gave him a ring.
"Steve," said the first, "wouldn't it be nice if [..pause..] you could
put togeather a very wide Calgary Skyline for the computer show?".
Said the second Steve: "How big?".
Replied the first "Oh about 3000 pixels wide by 200 high.".
"On a 512K Ami? You've been drinking too much tea!".
There followed many-a-late and long hour wherein the Second (with
borrowed 2Meg card, the 512K machine having met its match) Steve
spliced, cropped, massaged, retouched (the Wayner), and coloured
the faces of about 1/3 of AMUC's membership, not having forgotten
to do the orginal Skyline as well.
By the way the scrolling demo does run on 512K Amigas (the Ultimate
Machine says the 2nd Steve), but you will probably have to close down
everything to do this...
The amount of interest this scrolling demo created was amazing! The
scolling demo was run on 6 Amigas in a row simultaneously, with the
programs timed such that as a particular face scrolled off one screen
it was appearing on the next screen to the left. There were many who
upon visiting the booth who were so taken in that they bought the
answer:
"Yes, we have a SUN 260 acting as a file server under the
table, and the Amigas are networked to it via Ethernet... :-)"
Because of this interest it was decided that we should release the
demo into the Public Domain for the enlightenment of all Amigoid
(and non-Amigoid) lifeforms around the world... So here it is,

By the way, if you want to edit the picture you will have to get
a copy of Express Paint (available from PAR Software Inc.) as
it is the only Paint program to go beyond 1008 pixels wide (up
to 8192 pixels with current CHIP ram limitations). It also
supports editing in Extra Half Brite mode (unlike the rest) so
you can have 64 colour pictures too...
AMUC is the Calgary area Amiga users group to which Stephen
Vermeulen is the Chairman and Stephen Jeans is the Newsletter
Editor, Art SIG Chairman and Whiping Boy... The following is
general information on AMUC.
Membership in this club costs $25.00, $50.00 for those who wish the
Newsletter mailed to them, and $60.00 for over-seas memberships.
The club has a monthly newsletter, included in the membership fee,
which is published on disk as a support resource.
If you are not yet a member of AMUC and would like to join or
attend a meeting ask the staff at the Computer Shop, Hindson
Computing, or the Soft Options store, or write the following address:
AMUC
BOX 4365
Station C
Calgary, Alberta, CANADA
T2T 5N2
The general meeting is held on the third Wednesday of each month at
the University of Calgary's Engineering Bldg., Room A103 at 7:30 PM.
For time and meeting places of the specialty SIGs read the sig
reports in the newsletter.
AMUC is run by an elected (press ganged) executive committee
composed of the following:
Stephen Vermeulen - Chairman, 282-7990
Ian Gunn - Vice-Chairman, 228-1464
Alan Davies - Treasurer, 243-5693
Brett Wuth - Secretary, 282-1346

The Club's BBS is up and running for all members. The number to call is
the Fly By Wire BBS at 403-247-1728. The Amuc board is operated "behind" the
normal BBS and if you wish access to it you must first have your status on
the board upgraded to that of an AMUC member. This is done by simply sending a
message to the sysop requesting the upgrade. This board supports 300/1200/2400
baud and the BBS program running on it is very fast. Have fun on it! (Mucho
thanks go out to Bill Nelson for letting us use his board!)
