\l Dear Amiga Owner,\\
\vb
Thank you for your interest in Amiga\TeX.
On this disk you will find a demonstration version of the Amiga\TeX\
package. I have included a small version of Amiga\TeX, the previewer,
a few fonts, and a couple of sample \TeX\ files. It will run on a
512K system with two drives. To run \TeX, from the CLI, type
{\tt tex:tex {\bf filename}}
If you are running on a 512K Amiga, you must not be running any other
programs, or even have a RAM disk installed. To run the previewer, type
{\tt tex:preview {\bf filename}}
The demo files are in {\tt tex:inputs}. Included is the full source
for the Amiga\TeX\ manual, as {\tt amigatex.tex}.
Amiga\TeX\ runs exactly
the same as \TeX\ on mainframes, so refer to {\it The \TeX book}
by Don Knuth for details. The previewer is completely menu and
gadget driven, so just play with it to determine how it works.
There are also some keyboard commands; try `F', `P', the arrow
keys, and `Q'. (Note that when you give preview a file name, you
give it the file name without the extension; {\tt story} rather
than {\tt story.tex}, for instance.)
This is just a demonstration version, so the size of the \TeX\ is
limited, and you might not be able to run large documents. (The
standard version of Amiga\TeX\ for a 512K machine can deal with
larger documents.) In addition,
only a small number of previewer fonts are supplied, so the previewer
will draw black rectangles if it cannot find a particular font.
\TeX\ will
run on small documents, however, and will allow you to see that it is
indeed a complete version of \TeX. Even with this small version
of Amiga\TeX, you can run the entire Amiga\TeX\ manual.
The full version of Amiga\TeX\ comes
on eight floppies, and will handle larger documents than most mainframe
versions of \TeX, if your Amiga has at least 768K of RAM. On a 512K system,
you should be able to run most of your documents, unless you use a large
number of macros. On the eight distribution floppies you will find
\vb
\ite A new, smaller and faster \TeX, version 2.1\\
\ite La\TeX\ 2.09\\
\ite Bib\TeX\\
\ite Ini\TeX\\
\ite Full source to the Amiga\TeX\ manual\\
\ite A font caching scheme to handle the\\
\ite 1200 previewer font files\\
\ite A previewer which opens on the workbench screen\\
\ite Keystroke commands for the previewer\\
\ite Font conversion utilities {\tt gftopk}, {\tt pxtopk}, and {\tt pktype}\\
You will also find a new, expanded, 80-page manual, with a large set of
font samples. All of this comes attractively packaged in a three-ring
binder. To get it, send \$200 to Norman Naugle, $n^2$ Computer
Consultants, College Station, TX~~77841.
This document was typeset using Amiga\TeX, and printed on a QMS-Kiss laser
printer from the Amiga. It is supplied as a sample, called {\tt atd.tex},
which you can run and preview yourself. As Amiga\TeX\ is a full implementation
of \TeX, we can use all of the fancy mathematics capabilities of \TeX:
$$A=\pmatrix{a_{11}&a_{12}&\ldots&a_{1n}\cr
a_{21}&a_{22}&\ldots&a_{2n}\cr
\vdots&\vdots&\ddots&\vdots\cr
a_{m1}&a_{m2}&\ldots&a_{mn}\cr}$$
\noindent
or some simpler math:
$$\pi(n)=\sum_{k=2}^n\left\lfloor{\phi(k)\over k-1}\right\rfloor.$$
\noindent
Of course, we also have access to the table making capabilities:
$$\vbox{\tabskip=0pt\offinterlineskip
\def\tablerule{\noalign{\hrule}}
\halign to 160pt{\strut#& \vrule#\tabskip=1em plus2em&
\hfil#& \vrule#& \hfil#\hfil& \vrule#&

&& 6&&51--59&&.95\rlap*&\cr\tablerule \noalign{\smallskip}
&\multispan7* (first quarter only)\hfil\cr}}$$
\vb
Thank you for trying out Amiga\TeX.

\c Sincerely,\\
