LabelBase 2 © 1988 By Laura M. Young

Version 2 - December 14, 1988
LabelBase is a mini database program. It will also print out your records
in label format, so it is useful for doing mailing lists (like for Xmas)!
You should have at least 512K to use this.. since the records you enter are
kept in RAM until you save the file to the disk. This makes the program
VERY quick! The largest file you can create is about 40K long (which will
hold a LOT of records!). But the less memory you have, the less records
your file will be able to hold. Here is an example: Using a 512K machine
and specifying 3 fields (with a max length of 20 chars), my file was able
to hold over 800 records!
Here is a summary of the commands:
<C>reate new file
-----------------
This will make a new file in memory and ask you to specify how many fields
you want for each record. Then will ask you what you want the subject of
each field to be, and what the maximum number of characters can be.
If there is already a file in memory when you choose <C>reate, it will
tell you and ask whether you want to go back and save that file to disk
first.
<L>oad file
-----------
Loads a previously saved file from disk. If you haven't set your CURRENT
DIRECTORY from the <*>Disk Commands function, you must specify path names
when loading or saving your files. For example, to save a file named JUNK on
DF1: in the directory called STUFF, you'd type for the filename:
DF1:STUFF/JUNK. If your current directory is already STUFF, then you would
just type the filename JUNK.
<A>dd record to current file
----------------------------
This will let you add more records to the file currently in memory.
<E>dit record in current file
-----------------------------
This will let you edit a record(s) in the file currently in memory.
You will be given the choice to edit ALL files or just some.
<D>elete record from current file
---------------------------------
Deletes a record from the file currently in memory. You are given an option
to delete a certain record #, or SCAN for a certain record if you are unsure
of which record you want to delete.
<W>rite file to disk
--------------------
This will save the file currently in memory to disk. Always remember to
save your file before quitting. If you do forget to save it though, it will
tell you about it, so you can go back and save it. You must specify path
names here also if you haven't set your CURRENT DIRECTORY through the
<*>Disk Commands function.
<S>ort records
--------------
This will let you sort the file currently in memory by whatever field you
want. For example if your fields were Name, Address, Phone #, you could
either sort them alphabetically by Name, or by the Address, or Phone #.
A re-sort is automatically done after deleting any records, but if you add
records you must sort them when done.
<*>Disk Commands
----------------
This will bring you to another little menu for:
* Setting your CURRENT DIRECTORY - Once you set your current directory,
you will not have to specify path names for loading/saving files..etc.
* Delete a disk file - Just what it says.
* View directory - Gives the CURRENT directory listing.
<P>rint Record(s)
-----------------
You can print your record or records out, and they will be spaced just
right for printing on labels. (This is great for doing your Xmas cards!)
The labels should be 1 across, and you can specify whether you want to use
STANDARD labels (3 lines), LARGE labels (up to 8 lines), or CUSTOM (you
can specify your own parameters).
You will also be able to set up your labels and put up to 3 fields on
each line. The line length is 32, so if you put 3 fields on a line
(for example: Name, Address, Phone#) they must be less than 32 characters
or they will go off the label. For a mailing label you could set it up
like this:
Fields:
1 Last Name
2 First Names
3 Address
4 City
5 State
6 Zip
You will be prompted to enter the field # for each line. If you only want
one field on a line, or just two, you type a '0' for that one.
Line 1:
2 1 0 (First Names, Last Name, 0=that's all on that line!)
Line 2:
3 0 0 (just the Address on the 2nd line)
Line 3:
4 5 6 (City, State and Zip on the 3rd line)
It is really pretty simple...
After you set things up and are ready to print them out, you will be asked
if you want to print ALL the records in the file, just a SINGLE one, or
only certain records with a COMMON word in a certain field. If you choose to
print the records that are in common, it will ask you what to look for,
and then print out all the ones it finds.
*** Hint ***
I use a field named "Reference", and for the names on my Christmas card list
the Reference says 'XMAS'. So when printing out Xmas card labels, I choose
to print only the records with the common word of 'XMAS' in the Reference
field.
Well that's about it...... hope you like this program! If you have any
