Animation:Christmas Card 12/9/88
by Ken Baer
I created this animation using Animation:Apprentice, Animation:Multiplane,
and Animation:Editor from Hash Enterprises, and Deluxe Paint II from
Electronic Arts. To play the animation use the Display module or
ShowANIM (4.0 or greater). You need at least 1 Meg to play this animation.
The background text was created by using a couple of fonts
from Calligrapher, and playing with some basic brush functions.
To create the Santa and Raindeer "flyby", I used characters created by
Todd Kesterson on the Christmas Apprentice Library disk. The disk already
had the characters and actions I needed. Then I created the flyby choreography.
In order to make the output animation small (177K), I scaled down the
characters so that they were about 1 inch high, and I rendered
the frames with 32 colors rather than in HAM. I rendered 120 frames which
took about 6 hours (that's about 3 minutes/frame). Notice that these
characters are fully shaded, smoothly rounded, and have many moving parts.
The frames would have taken the same time if I'd made the objects bigger,
and would have rendered even faster if I used HAM (it has to do more
calculating to reduce the number of colors to 32).
I then used Animation:Multiplane to overlay the animation over the background
that I had created. And finally, I converted the animation to ANIM using
Animation:Editor. I could have added all sorts of detail to the animation
with Animation:Rotoscope, but I was too lazy to dink with all 120 frames.
Anyway, Merry Christmas everybody, and I hope you enjoy this animated card.
