- DATABASE UPDATE
-
- The UPDATE DATABASE option will allow you to build and maintain
- your catalog. Options are available to add new entries, or to
- delete, change or view existing entries. An option is also
- available to search the database for specified key words or
- phrases.
-
- Database updates are accomplished using the Function Keys. The
- Function Keys are located on the top row of your keyboard and are
- numbered F1 through F10. The uses of the Function Keys are as
- follows:

- F1 - New Key. Depress this key to enter a new record key.
- In this case, the record key is Program Name. You also use F1 to
- view the entry for any given program name.

- F2 - Append. Depress this key to Add a new entry into the
- catalog. To complete the add process, first depress F1 to enter
- the Program Name and then depress F2 to enter the remaining
- information.

- F3 - Change. Depress this key to Change a previously
- entered item. To complete the change process, first depress F1
- to enter the Program Name for which the catalog entry will be
- changed. If the entry is the correct one to be changed, depress
- F3 to make the change. If the entry is not the one to be
- changed, depress F5 (View Next) to continue down the catalog
- until the correct entry is found. The Change may also be
- preceded by the Find function.

- F4 - Delete. Depress this key to Delete a previous entry.
- To complete the Delete process, first locate the appropriate
- entry using F1 or the View or Find functions, then depress F4.
- You will then be ask to verify that the correct entry is being
- deleted.

- F5 - View Next. Depress this key to view the next
- sequential catalog entry. Entries are filed in the catalog in
- Program Name order.

- F6 - View Previous. Depress this key to view the previous
- sequential catalog entry.

- F7 - Find. Depress this key to Find the first entry that
- contains the specified key word or phrase. After depressing F7,
- you will be asked to enter the key word or phrase. You may abort
- the Find function by depressing the ESC key.

- NOTE: The Find function is only available if you have sufficient
- memory to accommodate the entire database. Otherwise, its is
- much more efficient to use the Query function to search the
- database for the desired entries.

- F8 - Find Next. Depress this key to Find the next
- occurrence of the specified key word or phrase. This function
- must be preceded by the Find (F7) function.

- Note: An alternate way to rapidly locate the desired entry is to
- use F1 to locate the Program Name. If the specified entry is not
- found, F5 may then be used to display the next higher key or F6
- may be use to display the next lower key. To move to the top of
- the catalog, depress F1 and then depress RETURN.

- F9 - not used.
-
- F10 - Quit. Depress this key to exit the File Maintenance
- program and return to the Main Menu.

- DISK SCAN PROCEDURES
-
- By selecting the SCAN DISKETTE option from the main menu, you can
- have the program automatically scan the directories of your
- Public Domain diskettes. As the scan progresses, the directory
- entries will be displayed. You may use Function Key 1 (F1) to
- change the entry before saving, Function Key 2 (F2) to save the
- entry in your catalog, Function Key 3 (F3) to bypass the entry,
- or Function Key 4 (F4) to abort the scan.

- If a selected directory entry has an associated comment, the
- information will be inserted into the Remarks field.

- GENERAL DATA ENTRY CONVENTIONS
-
- (1) Depressing the TAB key will cause the cursor to be
- positioned at the first character of the next field.
-
- (2) Depressing the Up Arrow will cause the cursor to be
- positioned at the first character of the previous field.
-
- (3) Depressing the Down Arrow will cause the cursor to be
- positioned at the first character of the next field. Depressing
- the Down Arrow when the cursor is over the last field will cause
- the entry to be written to the database.

- (4) Depressing the Left Arrow when the cursor is located in
- the first position of a field will cause the cursor to be
- positioned at the first character of the previous field.

- (5) Depressing the Right Arrow when the cursor is located
- in the last position of a field will cause the cursor to be
- positioned at the first character of the next field.

- (6) Depressing Control V will turn on Insert Mode. When in
- Insert Mode, all characters of a field to the right of the cursor
- will be moved one position to the right as new characters are
- entered. The right most character will be lost.

- (7) Depressing the ESC key will cause the function in
- progress to be aborted.

- (8) Depressing the Return key will cause remaining fields
- to be skipped and the entry to be written to the database.
-
- (9) Depressing the Help key will give you assistance
- relating to what kind of data are required to be entered at the
- current position of the cursor.

- WARNING!!
-

- Be sure to exit the program by selecting QUIT from the Main Menu.
- Upon selecting QUIT, the last buffer of data is written to disk.
- The failure to exit properly may result in your database being
- rendered unusable. As insurance against such a disaster, be sure
- to backup your database often.
