- ShowFont 2.0 - by Arthur Johnson Jr.

- ---------------------------
-
- This program allows you to quickly and painlessly view all 256
- characters in a typical font. I wrote it because using FontEd or (choke!)
- NotePad to see what a font looks like can be slow, tedious, monotonous, etc.
-
- To use this program, simply type "ShowFont [font_name] [font_size]".
- Both the font_name (Topaz, Ruby, etc.) and font_size (8, 12, etc.) are
- purely optional. If you do not specify a size, ShowFont will check all your
- available fonts and then show you what sizes of the font you wanted exist.
- If you also omitted the size, you can select what font to see simply by
- using the font requester. More on this below. By the way, if someone makes
- an icon for this program, it might just run from WorkBench. Since I never
- use WorkBench, I haven't bothered testing this.
-
- Yes, I've actually added "on-the-fly" font selection! (This is for
- all those ShowFont 1.0 users). A font selector will pop up when
- appropriate (like when you want to select a font to view). Just click on
- all the gadgets (they are pretty standard) until the font and size you want
- are highlighted. Notice you may also click directly on a font/size and
- that font/size will immediately be highlighted. Then, click the OK gadget.
- If you don't want to change the font you had been viewing (if any), click
- the CANCEL gadget.
-
- * NOTE * ShowFont looks in the FONTS: directory for all its fonts.
-
- For all of us font collectors who have entirely too many fonts for
- many popular programs to handle, and have split their font directories into
- many smaller font dirs for convenience, you can still see any font you may
- have by pushing the ShowFont window into the background, and ASSIGN-ing
- FONTS: to whatever dir has the font you want to see in it. Then, using the
- menu option "Read FONTS:", ShowFont will show (I'll have to find some other
- synonyms for "show" and "display" soon) the updated font list.
-
- While I'm at it, the menu options "About" and "Quit" are pretty self-
- explanatory. The "Font Selection" option will bring up the font
- requester. Notice all these menu features ("features" replaces the already-
- abused "option") have short key-equivalents (Amiga-Q for "Quit") because I
- believe in such things.
-
- If the font is found, ShowFont will display "font_name-font_size" in
- the upper left-hand corner of the screen next to the CLOSE gadget. To see
- the rest of the font (if all 256 characters cannot fit on the screen at
- once), use the three gadgets on the right-hand side of the screen. Again,
- their function closely resembles their appearance. Fiddle around for about
- three seconds and you will be quite familiar and comfortable with scrolling
- around a font.
-
- To exit the program, click on the CLOSE gadget or select the menu
- "Quit" option or press Right-Amiga-Q. I like three ways to end a program!
-
- Another note for ShowFont 1.0 users - I have stripped out all the
- blank "empty" spaces in the font when I display it (actually, PrintIText
- did), so you shouldn't have to scroll around aimlessly looking for the first
- defined character.
-
- I'll apologize now for this rather random and odd documentation file,
- but I'm usually dazed and confused after my program successfully runs
- without any apparent bugs.
-
- That's it! Any comments/questions/suggestions/flames/improvements/
- etc., can be directed to the following address:

- One of these days I'll memorize exactly how my GEnie account name is
- spelled so you could also reach me from that, but not today.
-
- If you happen to find a problem with the program (some fonts insist on
- over-writing my gadgets although I explicity say not to), please send me
- some sort of message describing EXACTLY what caused the problem and I'll try
- to fix it in the next release. I plan to re-write ShowFont entirely in
- assembly language for 3.0, but that will have to wait for a while until
- college permits.

- I guess I should add that this program and source are PUBLIC DOMAIN in
- all ways. Feel free to do whatever you like with the program, although give
- me some credit somewhere... 8) (sideways frog grin)
