- What is does:
-
- Pack-it will take all the files and directories on a disk and will put
- them into one file. If the file you end with is too large you can do the
- disk in two or more parts. You can also use Pack-it for part of a disk by
- using a valid path name to a directory. This will do just those files and
- dir's in that directory. Then you can ARC all the smaller files into one
- file.
-
- After you have your file it can be sent over the modem complete. When
- you get a file you just use Pack-it to read the file and it will store all
- the files and directories back on to a disk exactly as they were when you
- started, saving you the trouble of renaming, making directories, and every-
- thing else you have to do with an ARC file. By using Pack-it and ARC in
- conjunction you can ARC a complete disk by typing two lines at your CLI.
-
- So to sum it up the reason you will want to use Pack-it is so that you
- can, with one command, create or restore a complete disk before and after
- ARC'ing.
-
- Directions:
-
- The syntax is "Pack-it {c,e} DEV: FILENAME"
-
- c = Create new file
- e = Extract a file
- DEV: Can be any device or device and pathname.
- ( RAM:, DF0:c, VD0:fonts ... etc.)
- FILENAME is any valid filename.
-
- note: Pack-it will add '.PAK' to the end of the filename so you will
- want to keep your filename under 6 characters because ARC will
- not accept names longer than 10 characters. Also you don't have
- to put the .PAK at the end of your filename when extracting
- data from your file.
-
- Hints:
-
- When sending a disk you don't need to send all the files because a lot
- of them will be the workbench files we all have. At the CLI enter:
- 'dir >DIRLIST opt h' to make a file with all the files on the disk. You
- can ARC this in with the file to show what files were on the disk to start
- with. Then make a copy of the disk you want to send and delete off the copy
- all the workbench files and directories (c, l, s, fonts, libs, ...etc.).
- (You will also want to keep a disk around with just those files on it, for
- when you need a disk to extract a file on to it.) Now you end up with a disk
- that has only what you want to send, so now just run Pack-it and ARC the
- file it creates along with the DIRLIST and you are ready to send. (you will
- want to include a copy of Pack-it when you ARC if the other person does not
- have it yet.)
