  2. ALDE'S SHAREWARE CAROUSEL `PICK' UTILITY.
  3.  
  4. The disc contains 11000 zip files.  These zip files have from 1 to 150 files
  5. with-in.  The files may be something as complex as QMODEM4(c) or as simple
  6. as a single text file with someone's opinion about anything.
  7.  
  8. PICK is a simple, compiled QB4 program that calls the PKWARE(c) unzip utility.
  9. You can put PICK into your path and it will switch to your CDROM drive, and
  10. put up the menu automatically. (If your CDROM is drive D: nothing other than
  11. PICK is required.  If it is not drive D:, follow PICK with the CDROM drive
  12. letter -- i.e. PICK E).  This program will help overcome some of the slow-
  13. speed problems associated with the CD-ROM drive in that it will read the
  14. catalog into RAM all at once -- no need for the CD-ROM to go hunting each
  15. time.

  17. You need furnish just one utility program to use the disc.  That would be
  18. your favorite text editor.  
  19.  
  20. If you have your text editor or lister in your path just follow these steps.
  21.    1. -- Enter PICK.
  22.  
  23. >>>> If your CD-ROM is NOT drive D: then you must enter PICK [drive letter]
  24.      EXAMPLE: PICK E   <<<<

  26.    2. -- Peruse the menu and enter the directory number -- such as 001 for the
  27.          COMMUNICATIONS directory.
  28.    3. -- Now move through the list of programs that has appeared on the screen.
  29.          a. -- Both Caps Lock and Num Lock must be OFF.
  30.          b. -- Press PgUp/PgDn to bring up a fresh screen of files.
  31.          c. -- Use the Arrow Keys to select the file you wish to unzip.
  32.                (The file in the box at the bottom is the selected file.)
  33.          d. -- Press ENTER or F10 to unzip the file.
  34.                (PICK will make a directory called CDWORK on your drive C:
  35.                 make certain there is enough space on this drive to accomadate
  36.                 the files you will be unzipping.  If CDWORK already exists
  37.                 PICK will ask if you want to clear it.  Answer accordingly.)
  38.          e. -- PICK will now ask if you want to run one of the freshly
  39.                unzipped files.  If it is a .com or .exe file just enter the
  40.                name -- if there is a problem running it, PICK will exit back
  41.                to the menu you came from.**
  42.                If you want to look at a DOC or TXT file use your text lister
  43.                or editor -- it must be in your path.  If you were using LIST
  44.                you would type LIST [file name.extension]. You can now peruse
  45.                the document.  When you exit you will be returned to the menu
  46.                you came from.
  47.           f. --If you want to exit, press F1.  If you want to look at another
  48.                program just select another one.  If you want to change to a
  49.                new directory, push F3.
  50.           g. --If you wish to immediatly unzip the same file, you must
  51.                reselect it.

  53.      ** PICK was designed to help the user quickly search through the disc.
  54.         It is best used to simply find and unzip any file(s) you might know
  55.         you want -- or examine the .doc/.txt files to determine if this is
  56.         the right program you were hoping for.
  57.         Running a .exe or .com file via PICK is not always the best choice.
  58.         If the desired program requires a command line input the program will
  59.         try to run, fail and plop you back into the PICK menu.  If it is
  60.         a Terminate and Stay Resident it will enter your machine and send you
  61.         straight back to the menu you just left -- this may or may not serve
  62.         your needs.
  63.         However, if you do run a program, PICK will reset the screen and
  64.         put you back into position to continue your search.  This can make
  65.         it VERY simple to test a large number of programs or play a lot of
  66.         different games, quickly and easily.

  68. DISCLAIMER FOR PICK.EXE
  69. PICK.EXE is offered as a help utility, specific to ALDE'S SHAREWARE CAROUSEL.
  70. It is not offered as an integral part of the disk.  It has been tried on
  71. 386's with EGA screen and XT's with non graphic monochrome screen.  It has
  72. worked as it should on all of them.  If it does not work on yours, please
  73. contact us so we can debug it for the next volume.
