Notes is a hypertext application developed to investigate the effects of computers on the writing process, in particular, on the processes of acquiring and structuring knowledge when writing from source texts. Notes is designed to help writers record their own ideas (e.g., reactions, inferences, plausibility assessments), recover the context for those ideas easily and view ideas from multiple perspectives. The Notes program offers some advantages over traditional 3x5 note cards. First, the Notes program automatically keeps track of the reference information for each note card, considerably simplifying the bookkeeping involved in working with source texts. Second, the Notes program can search for note cards meeting criteria that the user has specified. Third, the Notes program has full editing capabilities, which allows the user to cut and paste between Notes and a window containing a text editor. so any notes can be included in an essay easily. Fourth, the Notes program allows the user to mark passages within a source that is in a file, so that the passage can be quickly retrieved from the note taken on the text. Finally, the Notes program allows the user to organize notes in any order and create multiple, alternative organizations for notes.
COURSE USAGE: The Notes program has been used at Carnegie Mellon for three semesters by four Freshman writing classes and at the University of California at Berkeley for one semester by two Junior/Senior level writing classes.
